The Art of Distraction

so ... today there is plenty of work to be done but it is a beautiful day here, it has been a busy week and it is Friday. Time for the art of distraction ... and this site ticks the necessary boxes! So easy to come here and see what my friends are doing, try out the various new options available ... spend some pleasant time out. but then I hear that voice at the back of my head saying, 'Dave, this is not getting your work done, you will get behind, miss deadlines ... end up on the streets!' :) So back to work for this Friday slacker!

Then play on

One of the aspects of this new venue that is really appealing to me is the ability to share music as easily as visual images. In the end much of what I have created or photographed comes down to trying to capture those elusive feelings, to generate an aide memoire for emotional or psychological states ... maps to find my way when I am lost or to guide others to places that I have enjoyed and want to share. Music has always been that for me ... a lodestone, a comforter, a stimulant ... a melt down and get yummy thing too. I hope some of you check out my offerings ... I will certainly be checking out yours!

Le weekend

Always after one of those falling headlong through work weeks the weekend arrives as though emerging through a singularity portal. One moment its stress and hassle, the next its wow where did that week go? Saturday morning ... I have lain in, broken my fast in a leisurely manner, done a little housework (I now live in a converted studio of compact proportions - so this is not too onerous!) and now checking out what is happening out there in vurt. I feel a second coffee coming on ... this week its Java! :)

The wisdom of Kilgore Trout #1

Watched 'Breakfast of Champions' again on DVD this week. As Vonnegut's legendary sci-fi writer reads, 'Until you die, it's all life'. Which is simple, amusing and true. So, as I sit here in my little studio looking out at the garden, the late summer sun, washing blowing on the line (oh, the rewards of domestic industry),  I reflect on this. Fuelled only by  a mug  of industrial strength java and the certainty that  today  requires no  professional work (hey, it's a Bank Holiday weekend!)  I have the synaptic processing speed  and the free  memory to cope with these apropos de nada speculations.  Beyond distraction, a pause for thought.  Free fall  breezes from  the now.

Time to open up a new bag of Rio River Valleys to hit that mellow vibe. Happy Sundays to any and all!

Beijos!

Written on water

There seem to be more than a few of we mere mortals with a penchant for Byron, Shelley and Keats. Perhaps Keats for me is the one who makes my heart beat and speaks to me in a language that I feel. He lives outside time - very difficult to 'fix' him in the early eighteenth century, he could be thousands of years in the future or never even ... written in water ... aren't we all but perhaps few see this, I don't know.

But while the water ripples ... the yearning ... the sensuality ... the adventure ... and the romance.

She press'd his hand in slumber; so once more He could not help but kiss her and adore.
John Keats

Jung could not have expressed it better himself!

Feed the passion!

Daze & Knights

So - killer week, now passed. Sometimes there are just too many plates to juggle. Too many meetings to attend, too many miles to drive, too many insoluble problems to solve (hey, that's what they pay you for!).The evening comes and your head is buzzing. And then it can be just too quiet. Watch a film, read a book, listen to some music, surf the net ... message to self: you should get out more. :) Some work:life balancing required. Hey ho.

How Long Howling ...

with apologies to Morcheeba ...

well, as Nietzche observed, 'What does not kill me makes me stronger' or something like that. That was a typically cheery offering of his. JPS isn't much better. Why am I thinking this at all? It's probably that diminishing day length thing, mixed with a frustrating work day and shaken with general overwork. I can get really maudlin ...

Thankfully, it doesn't take too much to distract me from feeling sorry for myself.

Even tho' I would prefer not to be sitting here on my own.

But that's life ... the wheel will turn when it's good and ready.

Hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. I have trees to see ... :)

Drawing Breath

another week gone, a few hundred more trees inspected, continuing the big survey tomorrow and Sunday. Luckily the weather is holding. Today was glorious ... drove down to the site (about fifty miles) with Dan, my youngest, listening to Bjork and Sparks. The sun shone, there was an absence of brambles and the banter was good, surreal and silly ... just the way I like it! We are working on re-branding Mules ... so far, the best slogan is: 'Mules, when a horse is too much and a donkey isn't enough'. If you have any ideas on this or any other subject, please feel free to comment, dear reader (sticking with the singular is probably best).

a demani!

Remarkable Meetings with the Antichrist

Eventful tree surveying day today. I may have said that the site is a Victorian Asylum in extensive grounds (124 acres). Part of it is still in use by the psychiatric service. The original buildings are within a steel security fence but the local gypsies have been breaking in to steal the lead off the roof. Dan and I saw a gang of people in there today and went to let the police know via the working high secure psychiatric unit. The first man we meet (through the mesh fence) introduces himself after a few exchanges. In the most matter-of -fact voice he says, looking me straight in the eye, 'I am the Antichrist.' So I said that I was very pleased to meet him. Strange though ... I had expected more. Supernatural beings can be a real disappointment sometimes.

The Donald Campbell Syndrome

... is when you have to push the thing to its limits. Hell, if I can just keep the nose of this thing down it's a new speed record ................................................................................

apropos of excessive working practices and subsequent need to stare at walls.

In the small hours

In between

Night and day

Where the dreamers live

In transience and changing lights

Emotional breezes

Zephyrs of the soul

Fill sails of angel wings

To soar beyond the cold ground.

Beneath Meaning

When you found me
I was raw, weak, delirious
Void of power
Beneath meaning
Under the mist of the mother
Blood lust shadow forest
Watching as Goddess Moon
Stared through black leaves

Then – a time to recall sweet beauty
Dream the light diamond vision
From the essential whisper
After rain

Memoire de Berlin

And he feels Her finger nails tracing down his back - cold and firm their lines upon his skin...

"I'm tracing your soul story" she whispers in his ear, and runs a finger cross his lips now tasting of his blood - warm and sweet and vivid red....

"Continue..."

For me it always begins with a poem ...

In Berlin ... in the Fall ...

THANX 13-6-02

My eyes looked at you

stared

twin mirrors

like mystic doorways

something crossed

into my soul

found others

in the darkness

outside it is light

but inside

in the darkness

your stockings

and latex

bind me
