Here is a general time-line of the existence of the electric utilities I have covered in my photography.

  • Connecticut Light & Power Co. (CL&P) -- Formed in 1917.
  • Hartford Electric Light Co. (HELCO) -- Formed in 1881; acquired by CL&P in 1981. Was a founding member of Northeast Utilities (NU) in 1966.
  • Connecticut Power Co. (CP) -- Incorporated in 1899 as the Marine Power Company. Changed name to Connecticut Power Co. between 1903 and 1911.
  • Torrington Electric Light Co. (TELCO) -- Formed in 1887; acquired by CP in 1933.
  • Litchfield Electric Light & Power Co. (LELP) -- Formed in 1897; acquired by CL&P in 1945.
  • Danbury & Bethel Gas & Electric Light Co. (DBGE) -- Formed in 1854 as the Danbury Gas Light Co. Changed its name to Danbury & Bethel Gas & Electric Light Co. in 1887. Merged with Derby Gas & Electric Co. in 1953 to form the Housatonic Public Service Company (HPS).
  • Housatonic Public Service Co. (HPS) -- Formed in 1953 with the consolitation of Danbury & Bethel Gas & Electric Light Co. (DBGE), Derby Gas & Electric Co., and the Wallingford Gas Light Co.
  • New Hartford Electric Co. (NHE) -- Formed in 1901; purchased by CP in 1929.
  • Simsbury Electric Co. -- Formed in 1899; purchased by HELCO in 1939.
  • Manchester Electric Co. -- Formed in 1893; purchased by CP in 1929.
