The Belgian Girl (Rehearsal)
The Belgian Girl - Coope Boyes and Simpson’s latest work for Peace Concerts Passendale was performed in August 2000.   It’s a words and music piece with traditional, contemporary and specially written songs about the effects of the First War on Flemish women - how their work and lives changed when armies arrived on their doorsteps.  The format of the concert is rather unusual - two buses take the audience to different locations in the countryside around Passchendaele to hear live performances of music, poems and contemporary accounts relating to that specific place.  As well as stops on the battlefield and a house behind the lines, there’s a glimpse of social life with a chance to enjoy a meal, drinks and a Concert Party  - and some of the most melodic and haunting singing heard in any Peace Concert.  Joining Barry, Jim and Lester are Flemish singers Herlinde Ghekiere, Kathleijne Janssen and the remarkable Annemie Ponseele, whose singing with Wak Maar Proper was a highlight of the Christmas Truce / Kerstbestand Peace Concert and a breathtaking memory of Beverley Festival.  Peace Concerts are always an unforgettable experience, but this one was extra special.

Voor mijn Vlaamse en Nederlandse vrienden....

Grap van de Spar...

(

(Scheurkalender)
