Pensoj de mia filo pri ICANN en la manoj de la UN (Averto: mi tradukis tre, tre rapide, dum eble 5 minutoj):
The United Nations is a governing body of nations across the world. Each votes equally. Nations are ruled by the people that rise to the ruling positions. A great many of them reached the top by despicable means. It follows that they must be oppressive despots, in many cases, to maintain their power. But the Internet is about the free exchange of data. It becomes obvious that an organization with a large voting bloc dedicated to preventing upstarts from sharing information is unsuited to maintaining the network that requires the least amount of intervention in exchanging ideas as possible.
Ni analizu la Unuiĝintajn Naciojn. la UN estas estra korpo de la nacioj de la mondo. Ĉiu nacio havas egalan voĉdonon. Tiuj kiuj regas naciojn estas la personoj kiuj leviĝas (aŭ levigas mem) al la regadaj pozicioj. Tre multaj el ili atingis la supron per abomenaj rimedoj. The internet is a universal phenomen of liberty. That authority should not rest with one country.
However, I know that there needs to be an orderly 'caretaking' of internet addresses.
But I'm also hesitant about the ability of the UN to handle the matter in an expert manner. My understanding of the UN (based on my knowledge of their track record) is that they usually botch things.
When it comes to spam and related matters, I believe that the internet can be self-regulating.
Clarification: ICANN is not a part of the U.S. government; but is a private non-profit corporation. It is said (by some) that the U.S. government has too much influence over it.
