My Car Lasted Almost 17 Years

Friday August 31, 2007 at 09:51PM
It finally happened. My trusty old station wagon finally died. Cause of death: transmission failure. Not wanting (or having) the money to buy a new one, I found a great used car: 3 yrs old, 14,000 miles and in great condition. It's a Ford Taurus, top of the line model with tons of options. The funny thing is that most of the options on the car were not even invented when I bought my last car!

So now that I have a "new" car, I find myself wanting to take good care of it. My son and I have washed it, waxed it (haven't done that in about 15 years) made the tires shiny, and conditioned the leather seats. I even gave her a name: Fiona (from Shrek). She may appear to be no beauty, but to me she's a princess!

Waow, that seems to be perfect, you certainly made a good choice.
You know, we had about 20 years ago in Europe a Ford named Taurus,
but they actually improved the design!

Congratulations, Chaim! I used to have a Taurus - I absolutely LOVED it! And then they completely changed the design and I didn't buy another one.

Good luck and happy drives!

My 17 yr old car was a Mercury Sable (sister car to the Taurus).

Here is a photo of it as it was being towed away (how sad):

Good choice, I agree! May have to do the same thing soon and kiss my beloved MINI Cooper good-bye... The news ones aren't an option, either, as the design sucks (of the new MINIs). Well, good luck and always a safe ride with Fiona!

The mini cooper can't be that old. Seems like they just came out a few years ago!

My hubby has a 1989 toyota truck, that he bought way back when it was new. $5000 then. I can just imagine how much they are now. Well, I keep hoping his truck will take a big S***T, otherwise he will be driving the thing like Fred Flintstone! LOL Just yesterday, the muffler split off. Talk about rust! I think it's time for him to look into something better. :) Congrats on your new car! It looks really nice!

Sometimes it's better to get a good second-hand car without much mileage than a brand new model of inferior quality. 14000 miles isn't much for 3 years of ownership. Fiona's hardly moved. Must be almost as good as new.

The Taurus depreciates considerably during the first few years (as opposed to the Toyotas and Hondas), so I was able to get more car for less money this way. It also has the upgraded engine called Duratec. Hit the pedal and I'm pushed back into my seat. Love it!

Sorry for your loss! I know just how that feels. My current car, Smithers, and I send our best wishes to you and Fiona. Happy motoring!
