SICKO! The CEOs Get Rich While We Wait

Friday August 10, 2007 at 12:56AM
I never had much reason to complain about my medical care here, but my doctor recently sent me to have my blood drawn for routine tests.

Never mind that in the "old days", the nurse would just draw your blood in the doctor's office and send it to a lab. Nowadays, the insurance companies will not pay the doctor for this. So it's off to lab myself to have my blood drawn.

I should also mention that many insurance companies just switched contracts to a lab called LabCorp because the insurance companies were able to get the contract for dirt-cheap. So instead of the usual lab I used to go to, where there was, at most, a ten minute wait, now I have to go to LabCorp. Apparently, so does the rest of my state.

So what has LabCorp done with all the money from the new contracts? Hire more personal to keep up with the new stream of customers? Heavens, no! I walked into the waiting room, and couldn't even find a seat. People waiting said the wait was around two hours! I walked out. I will not get my blood tested.

What ever happened to treating people with respect? The insurance CEOs are happy because the cheaper contract makes them richer. LabCorp is happy because they just got all this new money from contracts without having to pay a dime for new hires. And what do the CEOs have to say about the masses? Fuck 'em!

Well, Chaim, hate to sound cynical, but welcome to the real world... I know what you're talking about and for me the conclusion was to get privately insured about 2,5 years ago. That still doesn't make any doctor's appointment an exact walk in the park, but at least wait time is drastically less and the private insurance covers a lot more of - in my case required - treatments and medicine as the public ones.

But if it's any consolation, I would have probably reacted the same way as you did: Fuck'em back!

You should know that it's going to get worse over the next 10 years. Nursing homes, or long-term care facilities as they like to be called, are already extremely understaffed. They all seem to have mission statements that mention dignity and respect, but more times than not, they're only words to make families feel better about having to put grandma into a home.To make matters worse, those providing care are overworked and paid poorly. During a transition in my life, and there have been a few, I worked at such a place. I took a class on a lark , got a license, and decided to work with the elderly and infirm. Nothing gives you perspective like feeding another human being who can't feed himself.

You're right, our system is based on money; capitalism without compassion. Of course, most people only seem to mind when it involves them directly. The rest of the time we don't seem to notice a thing. Look at the bright side, at least you have insurance and a doctor. Thanks for posting this blog.

You are absolutely correct about nursing homes, although it's not new either. The money they collect from families has been called "blood money" for a long time. I've met a few owners of nursing homes; they are rolling in money, but they do not put that money into the care of their residents.

Every time I drive by the new million-dollar McMansion my neighbor (a nursing home owner) is building, all I can think about is the money he is sucking out of my grandmother.

Our state of Wisconsin is no better. I think this doctor clinics,labs,etc.. don't give a shit about people anymore. It's only about the money.

My mother got a doctors bill today. It really was pathetic. She tries her best to pay them monthly, usually $100. This month she sent them $25 because she a bit short. This letter stated: "Thank you for your payment, but we require larger payments". It comes down to this, if she doesn't pay the full amount within 15 days, they will send it to a collection agency, and make her pay $100 every time she sees a doctor.

What makes me angry is this is a woman on fricking Medicare!

Chaim Zvi replies:
This may just be an overzealous person in the office. Have her speak to the office manager or doctor. If it goes to a collection agency, the office loses 50% automatically. So most doctors are willing to work with you to avoid a collection agency.

We are worried, here in the UK, that out National Health Service will go the same way the Amerian system did. The British government are being lobbied HARD by the insurance fraternity. Bastards. Ha. It's no joke that tobacco Institutions instruct their pension trustees (and stock brokers) to invest in medical insurance companies. It's a growth industry.

Every time I visit the US on business, I have to insure myself to the eyeballs to get the appropriate medical cover.

What a f*cked-up world we live in....
