an unanswered question, vacation, and photosharing

It’s been over a week since I originally asked this question. And it’s been over a week with no answer from the Ipernity staff.

Heading off on vacation in a couple of hours. Going to enjoy two weeks of heat and temples in Cambodia! And of course, planning on taking lots of pictures …

When I return, I’m going to have to settle on a site to host my photos. Definitely decided that it will not be Flickr (the atmosphere all around is just uncomfortable). But my decision to stick with Ipernity (as much as I love the EU attitude, the much higher quality of photos posted here, the lack of lag, the technical expertise, and the integrated blog) is going to be dependent on the answer to my question

quick and easy photoshop “bleach bypass”

Loved this style when I watched the movie Huo Yuan Jia (Fearless) with Jet Li. Typical of this style is strong contrast, desaturated colors in the highlight ranges, saturated colors in the shadow ranges.

Bleach bypass, also known as skip bleach or silver retention, is an optical effect which entails either the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching function during the processing of a film. By doing this, the silver is retained in the image along with the color dyes. The result is a black and white image over a color image. The images usually would have reduced saturation and latitude, along with increased contrast and graininess.
Wikipedia
  1. Start with your original photo
  2. Do your usual post processing
  3. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation
    Set the Saturation to -100
  4. Set the blending mode of the layer to Overlay
  5. And finished!
  6. Control the intensity of the effect with changes in blending mode
Pin Light > Soft Light > Overlay > Hard Light > Vivid Light > Linear Light
Then fine tune using the layer opacity

social is as social does

I am not a social person yet I keep finding myself drawn back to social sites. This site starts to feel comfortable yet it still has too much air of the other about it. Missing on both is any sense of æsthetics. In the mad rush to fit everything onto the page, the beauty of the individual photo is lost. Combine the social aspects of Ipernity with the refusal to sell out of Smugmug with the beautiful templates of Zenfolio
