Twitter how to: Using Your Twitter Account

Twitter how to: Using your Twitter account.

Building Goodwill and Community

@username: Use this to build goodwill with others by sending traffic their way. As an example let's say I sent a tweet talking about a new blog post of mine. You follow the link, read the blogpost and think to yourself, "Self, there is really good information in that blogpost." You send a tweet to your followers and you write: @brianadrian has a really good blog post. Your followers will be able to click through to my profile by clicking @brianadrian on that message. OR you can click the arrow (reply button) beside my tweet and @brianadrian will be populated into your update bar.

Direct Messaging (USE SPARINGLY): For more personal communication with your Twitter friends. Only users following you will receive your direct messages.Your followers can view your message on their twitterpage and in their email if they have their setting set to do so. Simply visit your friends profile page and on the right side of page under Favorites is Actions. Click message.

Homepage Tabs (Right side of homepage)

-Replies: All replies to your posts go here.

-Direct Messages: All posts sent directly to you.

-Favorites: All posts you have favorited.

-Everyone: See what everyone on twitter is talking about.

-Following: All the people you are following.

-Device Updates: Set up SMS updates.

Posting Tips

-Be easy and natural.

-Never force a product or service down your followers throats.

-Never retweet the same link over and over again.

-Share quality links you find on twitter if your followers would benefit from them.

In conclusion, treat everyone how you would like to be treated and you will do just fine. Treat Twitter as a long term business tool and don't be discouraged if you can't find the place you "fit in" right away. You will. Stay with it, keep the commitment and you may just find your new best friends.
