voila

c'était mon cri dans le vide

bonsoir :)

et joyeux noel en plastique !

Recommendations    top

Specifications    Accessories    Performance   Comparisons    Recommendations

If you need to shoot today, get a readily available D3 or D300, since it will be a few weeks until anyone gets their hands on a D700.

The only thing you're getting for $1,200 more than a D300 is much better high-ISO performance and a green light to buy even more expensive ultra-ultra wide lenses. For most people, I wouldn't bother, or I'd step up all the way to the much faster and fully professional D3.

If you're shooting sports and action, the D3 is still your camera. If you're shooting landscapes, the D3X (not yet public) or Canon 5D is better.

Honest: if I need landscape image quality, the Canon 5D beats the D3 and costs and weighs much less. If I want speed for sports, action and news, the D3 has far faster AF and frame rates than any of these. The D700 or D3 aren't the cameras for landscapes; that's the 5D or D3X.

Lens Suggestions

See my Nikon D3 Lens Suggestions.

Personally, for landscapes and weird stuff, the 14-24mm is what I use all day. For photos of family and friends in any light without flash, the 50mm f/1.4 AF-D is unbeaten. For a tele, pros use the 70-200mm VR, and you might prefer the much lighter (and one-third as expensive) 70-300mm VR. Personally I grab the 80-400mm VR for its extra reach, but its AF is too slow for action.

Nikon's PR shows the D700 with the 24-120mm VR. It's an OK lens, and Nikon's closest to a do-everything FX zoom, but it's among Nikon's least sharp lenses.

I'm hearing that Nikon will be kitting these with the 24-120mm VR. That's OK, but not likely to get you the sharpness and low-light sensitivity for which most people want a D700. The 24-120 VR just happens to have the price Nikon thinks you're likely to pay, and specs that seem attractive, but it's not the lens I'd get.

When I got my D3, the first lens I pulled out for general walking around was the 24-120 VR based on those very same presumptions, but I didn't like it. The vignetting is obvious at 120mm (unknown if the correction of the D700 fixes this).

Few if any pros use mid-range zooms, like the 24-120. Most use a wide zoom and a tele zoom, and maybe drop a 50mm in their pocket for low light. When I use a midrange zoom with my D3, I kid you not, I use the cheap plastic 28-80 G if I want sharp results, great macro and instant autofocus (faster than the 24-120 VR). I use the 28-200 G if I want to cover all focal lengths very sharply and have decent macro, but the AF of the 28-200 G isn't all that fast. Neither of the 28-80 G and 28-200 G are made anymore, which is why Nikon isn't pushing them. Each is a cheap plastic lens, but with stellar performance.

Hint: I never use a midrange zoom. For almost all my walking around and family photos, I use the 50mm f/1.4 D. The fast f/stop lets me stop action in any sort of darkness, all with clean, creamy and sharp images at the high ISOs so easy for Nikon's FX cameras.

Forget DX lenses. You'll get much sharper results and save $1,200 by using them on a D300 instead!
