Dear Team & friends,
while we are all waiting for this feature to be added to ipernity i am constantly testing other services and ways to find one that i like. So far none of them is really convincing.
What is missing here?
I want to have something like flickrs guest pass. Upload a bunch of pics of an event - let's say a good friends' birthday party - and share it with all those that ... well, whoever, no matter if they are members here or not. I want a secret and/or password-protected link to a (hidden) album or set of pictures. Maybe the possibility to download all the pics in a zipfile (large/original) for those who want to have the pics (and maybe videos as well) on their HDs. It would be great if these guests could also leave a comment and if ip-members could add pictures and videos to the album, maybe it should therefore be a group rather than an album? Just an idea. Flickr does have "private groups". Vimeo allows to share single videos with contacts (not only pre-defined groups like family/friends but with contact a, b, d, g, x,... if you like ) or password protect it, so that you can send those who you want to share it with the password. I think a combination would be awesome.
So what are the alternatives?
- tinyalbum
(+) very simple and fast (-) not sure how long it will be there, quite new, small, not very reliable sometimes, meaning not functioning - flickr
(+) it has the basic features (-) we don't want to use flickr, right? i don't want to pay it, personally and it's senseless without a pro account. - picasa webalbum
(+) free, easy, map, comments, slideshow, download (-) only 1GB space, and just somehow i don't like it
- any sharing site
(+) free, fast way to share a zipfile with the images, (-) no online gallery and community features, no comments
I also tested roodle, badoo, dropshots, sevenload, fociki, facebook, photwo, jalbum and a lot more but none matched my expectations and ... of course i would prefer to have these pictures here, where i spend a lot of time daily anyway. Why use another service for only this one feature?
I must admit that i don't really understand the priorities the team sets for their projects. There are lots of languages now, okay, that's nice but is it really used and is that really first priority? The piclens workaround is a great thing but wouldn't it be good to add interesting features to make the heavy users happy and to even make people stay? I somehow sense that a lot of former active members are not that active here anymore... Are they gone already? I hope not!
But maybe it's just me... maybe my senses fool me and i demand too much :)
Best regards,
Sascha
