| tags |
First of all, tags are some sort of keywords you can add to your docs, photos, audiofiles, videos, blogpost here. If you have allowed, others can tag your pictures too.*
Some general info about tags and tagging can be found here: "tagging" (DE) (EN), "tag" (EN)
How I use tags:
I have several ways of using tags.
-
to make myself find images/docs/... later'
i use ipernity for backup reasons as well, tagging makes finding stuff very easy after months. you don't have only one way to find your things later when you use several tags. if you only use titles, albums, descriptions, it might be hard to remember what you named the docs later. while tagging i use all the words i think might make me find this one later very easy. In time you will know if you use english or german or both, plurals or singular expressions (or both).
-
to make others find my images
when i am interested in others "self-portraits" for example. I click that link and then click "explore this tag" to see others images tagged with "self-portraits". ** -
to categorize my image
screenshots for example -
to group images
well, probably you don't like to create a new album for every set or collection of pictures you made, i use a unique tag here like "20070930_walk" (date_title) for a walk outside on september 30th. -
to express and capture associations
with some of my expressive images it's important for me to use the tag feature as some sort of braindump-area, i type whatever word comes to my mind, and it makes me feel a relief. this sounds weird, but it works for me and those who know me and my SPs by know, know that it is most important to read my tags coming along with the pictures to understand what it is about.
Examples: one, two, three, four, five (not the best examples, but some...)
Member tags:
membertags
Ipernity also has "member tags" with which you can place notes on the picture showing where in that image a certain IPmember is seen for example. You can also remove the note but keep the membertag ( i usually do this if i do not want to derange the image with the note ). This is what makes docs appear on your homepage in "Latest docs about you" and "Latest posts about you", that's when some other member has added your membertag to some pic or post. This is a great feature, i have never seen before (no i do NOT use StudiVZ) but i have seen members here misuse this function to promote themselves by adding their own member tags to pictures they are not related with.
More tips and links:
- Explore tags ( top tags this week, month, all time)
- Find people near you: Use the map
- Use RSS Feed for certain tag (keeps you posted on new docs tagged with a certain tag)
- Search for colors like #CC0000
- You can edit, replace and delete tags. i.e. old flickr tags you don't want anymore. Look here.

* i wish tags that have been added by others would appear in a different color or with a certain icon, sometimes people add tags that "destroy" the meaning or they anything else i would not like to have there. I DO want others to tag my images, cause i am out for dialogue not monologue or arrogant, selfish posting! Still i would love to have this enhanced. @team :-)
** i know a lot of pro-photographers here don't tag their images, cause they don't want their images to be stolen. well i had some talk about this with tobitobi and others. I prefer using Creative Commons licenses. (If you have questions about CC, you can also ask Nicole or Kai.) Think that those who would steal images will still do, no matter if you add tags like "(c)" and "all rights reserved" in capitals with exclamation marks. The license is mentioned on the page anyway. So those that heed licenses will find it and accept it. If you don't use tags you also block out those positive people that possibly look for this exact picture, for whatever (legal) reason. To share their thoughts and maybe professional statements or maybe even buy your picture or ask you to do some shooting for them. Believe it or not even i as a non-pro was asked for selling pictures or join a project through pictures i uploaded at flickr or here. This would never have happened if i wouldn't be so open with my stuff.
Anyway, i think posting all your pictures with "all rights reserved" is not what websites and communties like ipernity are about nowadays. To me (!) it's about sharing, communication, networking, dialogue, support, friends, ...
It's totally okay if you are of another opinion. I just wanted to try to explain my point of view, my thoughts after using tags and tagging and sharing my things online on a lot of sites now for years. To me there are more pros than cons. Maybe some people just dont change their preferences concerning licenses and don't use tags because they don't know why and how.
Final words:
I hope this article helps some. Feel free to add appropriate tags to my pictures and docs, i see it as a support and dialogue! Please don't add member tags to docs you are not related to.
If you have other reasons why and how or why not to use tags , please comment!![]()
coming up next... "why fav, why comment... it's (not) all about support".
