First of all, tags are some sort of keywords you can add to your docs, photos, audiofiles, videos, blogpost here. If you have allowed, others can tag your pictures too.*
Some general info about tags and tagging can be found here: "tagging" (DE) (EN), "tag" (EN)
How I use tags:
I have several ways of using tags.
- to make myself find images/docs/... later'
i use ipernity for backup reasons as well, tagging makes finding stuff very easy after months. you don't have only one way to find your things later when you use several tags. if you only use titles, albums, descriptions, it might be hard to remember what you named the docs later. while tagging i use all the words i think might make me find this one later very easy. In time you will know if you use english or german or both, plurals or singular expressions (or both).
- to make others find my images
when i am interested in others "self-portraits" for example. I click that link and then click "explore this tag" to see others images tagged with "self-portraits". ** - to categorize my image
screenshots for example - to group images
well, probably you don't like to create a new album for every set or collection of pictures you made, i use a unique tag here like "20070930_walk" (date_title) for a walk outside on september 30th. - to express and capture associations
with some of my expressive images it's important for me to use the tag feature as some sort of braindump-area, i type whatever word comes to my mind, and it makes me feel a relief. this sounds weird, but it works for me and those who know me and my SPs by know, know that it is most important to read my tags coming along with the pictures to understand what it is about.
Examples: one, two, three, four, five (not the best examples, but some...)
Member tags:
membertags
Ipernity also has "member tags" with which you can place notes on the picture showing where in that image a certain IPmember is seen for example. You can also remove the note but keep the membertag ( i usually do this if i do not want to derange the image with the note ). This is what makes docs appear on your homepage in "Latest docs about you" and "Latest posts about you", that's when some other member has added your membertag to some pic or post. This is a great feature, i have never seen before (no i do NOT use StudiVZ) but i have seen members here misuse this function to promote themselves by adding their own member tags to pictures they are not related with.
More tips and links:
- Explore tags ( top tags this week, month, all time)
- Find people near you: Use the map
- Use RSS Feed for certain tag (keeps you posted on new docs tagged with a certain tag)
- Search for colors like #CC0000
- You can edit, replace and delete tags. i.e. old flickr tags you don't want anymore. Look here.

* i wish tags that have been added by others would appear in a different color or with a certain icon, sometimes people add tags that "destroy" the meaning or they anything else i would not like to have there. I DO want others to tag my images, cause i am out for dialogue not monologue or arrogant, selfish posting! Still i would love to have this enhanced. @team :-)
** i know a lot of pro-photographers here don't tag their images, cause they don't want their images to be stolen. well i had some talk about this with tobitobi and others. I prefer using Creative Commons licenses. (If you have questions about CC, you can also ask Nicole or Kai.) Think that those who would steal images will still do, no matter if you add tags like "(c)" and "all rights reserved" in capitals with exclamation marks. The license is mentioned on the page anyway. So those that heed licenses will find it and accept it. If you don't use tags you also block out those positive people that possibly look for this exact picture, for whatever (legal) reason. To share their thoughts and maybe professional statements or maybe even buy your picture or ask you to do some shooting for them. Believe it or not even i as a non-pro was asked for selling pictures or join a project through pictures i uploaded at flickr or here. This would never have happened if i wouldn't be so open with my stuff.
Anyway, i think posting all your pictures with "all rights reserved" is not what websites and communties like ipernity are about nowadays. To me (!) it's about sharing, communication, networking, dialogue, support, friends, ...
It's totally okay if you are of another opinion. I just wanted to try to explain my point of view, my thoughts after using tags and tagging and sharing my things online on a lot of sites now for years. To me there are more pros than cons. Maybe some people just dont change their preferences concerning licenses and don't use tags because they don't know why and how.
Final words:
I hope this article helps some. Feel free to add appropriate tags to my pictures and docs, i see it as a support and dialogue! Please don't add member tags to docs you are not related to.
If you have other reasons why and how or why not to use tags , please comment!![]()
coming up next... "why fav, why comment... it's (not) all about support".

i mean at flickr, the tags are listed in the order you type them, not alphabetically or something. this was better for me.
and ... exactly what you said about the tags by others!
maybe the team will let me / us know their opinion.

Tagging is OK for stock photography if you want to help CUSTOMERS not thieves to find your images.
In general I agree it would be cool to have some tags to know what's up with the image
imho

"(I wonder if there are any ways to find our pictures "outside" of ipernity (api?)" .....
naiv question isn't it?
log out- got ipernity.com - type a word- and hit search ...... anyone can find anything, just based on tags.
This is not a selling plattform its a WEB2.0 plattform!
regarding children pictures:
I totally agree that it is NOT ok! In NO way!
but:
There are always sick people which will do that. That is a social problem. We all use that medium internet. Now we have to deal with consequences. Too bad, I agree, but reality too!
I always wonder how naiv people deal with this things. Maybe I'm paranoid or what ever but that is reality..... insider YOUR & MY house too because you are connected to the www./
You know the German TV advertising regarding "protecting children" against the dangers in WWW? This is how it works..... and this is only the beginning!
I will drop you some personal lines to that theme, which I think about for a couple of days....
So what's the deal? Should the government protect us?
As Flickr did that (protect us against "porn") a loud scream came up! "We are all grown up and can handle that on our own...." Bla Bla Bla.... That was called censorship then.....
-------------
I know, hard word, my english is too bad to word that correctly, hope not to be too misunderstood....

i dont think people that misuse / steal pictures in masses use the manual search. but you are right. this way / possibility will always be there.
assbachpro replies:
we should publish some advices for parents maybe.
how to protect children.

(I use tags, but often I am lazy or I can't think of anymore words I could tag the images with... ;))
I agree with the thing that tags left by other people should be in another color or with an icon or whatever.
Sometimes I use tags to say something about the picture that is not so important or serious that I don't want to write it as description - in that case tags left by others can be confusing for others or change the meaning... And sometimes there are tags left by others, I would not use myself (e.g. "sexy")... so... I delete them... (I wouldn't do that if it was apparent that someone else left this tag).

My opinion about member tags: I asked the Team to give as more than one type of member tags: you can use it to draw the attention on the doc/post ("this is dedicated to you" or "Team: look here!"), you can use it to give info on who is present on a doc/post relates to me/you as you stated in your article, you can use it as a pinpoint to help you re-find a doc/post...
I used the latest to keep trace of pseudo-groups I was interested in, as an example.
My 2 cents.

Apart from that I am only consistent in putting city/country in the tag and HDR if its an HDR.
The event specific tags seem a bit too much for me as I could look things up by date, but since you use this as storage your requirements probably differ.
There is also a multi-lingual problem here since many people use their native language (tag munich vs. münchen).
65% of all ipernity "self-portrait" tagged pictures are yours... Very revealing :)
