M42 manual focus lenses

Saturday March 28, 2009 at 07:17PM

My father lent me four manual focus lenses, which I intend to test during the next couple of days/weeks:

tiger
tiger

Auto Revuenon 55 mm f/1.4
Hanimar 55 mm f/1.4 (looks very similar to the previous)
Meyer Görlitz Primoplan 58 mm f/1.9
Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50 mm f/2.8

I do have an awfully hard time focusing with these screwed to my EOS 400D, expecially under low light conditions, open aperture and short DOF. More than 70% out of focus so far. But I like the feel of it very much. Since my first SLR is the EOS 400D I still own now, this experience is absolutely new to me.

The tiger to the left was shot with the Auto Revuenon. No post processing.

The Auto lenses work for you? I have the problem that my adapter doesn't push the tiny stick into the lens mount which means that aperture will stay wide open all the time.
I've got just one lens that can be switched between manual and auto and another that is manual.

All the above lenses can either be switched to manual or are manual in the first place. Do or anyone ales have any experience with AF-confirm adapters?

Hi Agnus,

My experience with the AF-confirm adapters is very good. They take a bit getting used to, but once you know the lens, it works pretty well. I should add that I have a 30D, which is supposed to have a better viewfinder and better AF-sensors than the 400D.

Good luck and have fun!

If you want, you can take a look here for some examples of using M42 lenses using the AF-confirm adapter:

Most pictures are made with the CZJ Sonnar 135/3.5 , Pentax Takumar 35/3.5 or Takumar 200/4 lenses.

Thank you for your answer - I have already browsed through your album. In fact, your enthusiasm about these old lenses infected me! But my focussing problems annoyed me quite a bit. I have now ordered a af-confirm adapter and will soon show you my pictures taken with it.

Just be aware that there are many bad lenses out there! "Budget lenses" back then were not really good. On the other hand, the Pentax SMC Takumar lenses were the high-end line until end of the 70's, and they are still high-quality lenses. So, try to go for the lenses that were considered high-end at that time; they will deliver most sharpness and contrast.

Good luck!

Thanks for your useful hints. I have ordered an AF-confirm adapter via ebay which works very well until now. This week I will borrow an CZJ Sonnar 135 mm f/3.5 from my father and next weekend I plan do take my first shots with it!

Both Sonnars turned out to be either broken or infected by fungi...I got a Porst 135 mm 2,8 MC aswell which I will test soon. On closer inspection I also found some minor fungi on the back lens... I wonder if this really will affect my pictures in a way I will notice.
