Most of my Flickr friends know that I volunteer at the bait shack. Its at the Fort Worth Zoo and I take care of a stingray named Bob. Well, I used to only live 10 min from the zoo and it was a guaranteed every other weekend gig. It hasn't been turning out that way lately. Now I live an hour away and every time Ive driven there it has been pouring down rain. I hate to drive in those conditions but I do it anyway.
I hadn't been there in about three weeks and some things had changed. I had noticed that one of our red drums was missing. We had three of them and they are huge fish. We always babied them because they are so personable. We would feed them extra scraps of fish if there was any left over. Well, I was informed that one of our red drums got fed to the gharials the other week! They called it enrichment. The whole bait shack staff was a bit upset at this as it was a display animal that was used as food. Well, they are a commercially fished species but still, we loved them.
Another change was that the Great Barrier Reef exhibit was put under our charge and we will be working over there too with the blacktips! :))) I got to go over there today and take a peek in the huge tanks they have. I didn't have my camera with me as we were getting water for our other tanks, but I'll get some shots next time. It was really cool! This big Morey Eel came swimming up to the surface of the tank. I think it thought we were going to feed it. It would have been really cool to get a shot of that. Oh well.
Then about half way through the day a zoo visitor got my attention and said that a pelican had died and was floating in the lagoon right out side our door. Well we jumped up to see what had happened and yes there was a dead bird. But it wasn't a pelican. It was a baby Spoonbill. :(( With all the rain it probably was weakened and finally given up. I didn't see it but the other two zoo keepers I was with attended to it. Poor little bird. That was a bit sad too. Usually when things die at the bait shack its a hermit crab or a sea urchin. We are not used to larger animals dieing there. Well, that's life I suppose. I got two new shots of the sea horses though. :)
