Hamster Fact: There are mutant hamsters out there! Since hamsters were originally a lab animal, they have bred them to have certain characteristics for experimentation. Some of the more notable of these mutations are the Hairless Hamster, and the Anophthalmic Hamster. The hairless has been growing in popularity as a pet, but they tend to be fragile creatures that need lots of care and of course warmth! They are not as hardy as the original hamster, they live half as long generally. The other hamster, Anophthalmic, is a genetic mutation in the white hamster that results in a hamster that is born without eyes. Usually they do quite well since their eyesight is not that great to begin with and they rely on their other senses to "see" the world. Both are quite cute in their own way.
