The European Hamster or the "Hamster of the Alsace" has been recently put on the endangered species list with only 600 individuals left in the wild. As a result, France is being fined for not protecting the only colony of wild hamster in Western Europe. They were once plentiful but with the expansion of urban areas and farmers switching to crops of maize instead of cabbage, they are now facing extinction.
