Interesting problem with 'Photoshop profile'

Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 02:42PM

I use the Photoshops raw converter to load CR2-Files from my Canon camera into Photoshop. After saving the postprocessed image and uploading to Ipernity, the saturation and contrast is very low, the image appears different from the original - which leads to a lot of anger ;-). Finally Philpp my son detected the problem, which I want to share with you.

After loading the CR2-raw file into Photoshop CS4 the profile is automatically set to 'Adobe RGB (1998)'. You must change it to 'sRGB IEC61966-2.1' using the menu 'Edit/Convert to Profile/Destination space'. There you can select the proper profile from a drop down menu.

Exactly the same thing happend to me. My photos were out off color, saturation and had no contrast.
I suspected it have to do with the differens between sRGB and RGB.

Thank you fore share it whit us

Have a nice day

And I'm gonna tell you an even more subtle detail. When you open the CR2 file with PS, it brings you Camera Raw software, right ? But if you go to Camera Calibration (right side menu), you can change the profile from Adobe Standard to Camera Standard.

What this does is that, Adobe Camera Raw does not know how to exactly read the CR2 files so it approximates the colors, but with Camera Standard profile, the colors are much closer to what you see in the camera, the colors are more vivid, more contrast and the reds are reds... not orangeish-yellowish :)

Hope you understood what I said and hope it helps you :)
Good luck!

Thanks a lot Seelview, but if I choose Camera Calibration at the right side menu there is a drop down menu for 'Camera Profile', but you can choose only 'Matrix'.
Nothing with 'Adobe Standard' or 'Camera Standard'......what's wrong with my PS or with my brain? ;-))

Surely with PS :)
Your Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) it's not up-to-date, probabil older than version 4.4. You have to update it to version 5.5 with adobe update or with one of these links:
For mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4577
For win: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4578

Thanks a lot......I installed the update 5.5 and I can now select Camera Standard from the drop down menu, this works ......but the "Source Space" is still Adobe RGB after opening the image. So you still must convert it into sRGB.......!?

To view it on a screen with correct colours, yes.

Thanks for the info and link, Rob. I wonder that there is obviously no possibility in PS to change the profile to sRGB as the default.

Seelviewpro replies:
Of course you can. Open a CR2 file and while the ACR is open go to Camera Raw Preferences from file menu, and there check the box with "Make defaults specific to camera serial number", hit ok and then hit Done.

And that's it, all your raw files will be opened with sRGB.

Additionally I can recommend Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. You can manage your photos with it and above all you can wonderfully edit your photos using camera raw settings. It also works great with Photoshop, after you do a minimal color edit in Lighroom you go to PS with those settings and edit the photo even further.

The Adobe RGB colour space is much wider then the sRGB colour space, which is used by most web browsers. Best if you keep your originals in the Adobe RGB, or other equivalent colour space, and convert only the jpg copies to sRGB when you prepare them for uploading on the internet. At least in my view. ;)

Rob Youngpro replies:
I don't think so, and from my point of view, sRGB isn't a good colour space to work in inside Photoshop. I make a lot of prints so ProPhot gives me a colour space that better matches my printer.

If you choose the Save for Web option, you can tick the box that says Convert to sRGB so that you always save with an sRGB profile.

Any image that is to be displayed on the Internet or any screen should be converted to sRGB. The vast majority of display devices can only interpret sRGB correctly.

Inside colour managed software such as Photoshop, you can use any colour space you like. I work in the ProPhoto colour space (excellent for preparing prints) but anything I upload to ipernity or my website gets converted to sRGB first.

Hello friend, when I need color fidelity, contrast, focus ... process the Raw in Canon DPP.
Interesting your article and coment.

Seelviewpro replies:
Canon DPP produces the best colors and contrasts, exactly like you shoot it. I used it sometimes when i needed something to be printed on a magazine. But in terms of user friendly interface and processing options doesn't compare with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw.
