[EN/DE] New sharpening algorithm a little soft? Neuer Schärfungsalgorithmus ein bißchen weich?

Thursday May 22, 2008 at 05:57AM

Hi everyone! I have the feeling with some of my latest photos that the thumbnails look really soft due to the new sharpening algorithm. I am a fan of crisp and sharp shots and I don't really know yet wether I like it or not. What do you think? Did you notice this too?

Hallo! Was denkt ihr? Habt ihr das auch schon bemerkt?

From my point of view that would be a good move. Sharpening should be something controlled by the user in the original photo and not something that ipernity adds or removes when downsizing.

In any case do you have some examples to back up these claims?

The original photo isn't processed at all, that's not the issue. Only the preview photos were sharpened pretty strong before, but now it's the complete opposite they look like softened instead of just a little less sharpened. For example this thumbnail here looks pretty soft, while the original photo when you open it is crisp and sharp.

Office Twins
The window front looks very soft here, that isn't the case in the original photo which is unusual, because normally when you reduce the size of an image you win some sharpness but don't get a softer result than before.

Actually I think the photo is very sharp, if you watch the lines that move to the top, any more sharpening would produce halos. I think it's natural that very fine detail that does not occupy a lot of space in the picture will be lost when reducing the size of the photo.

Btw it's confirmed the sharpening algorithm has changed:

I see we have a different opinion on that. I always found the sharpening applied by the upload process too much because it produced lots of halo effects at all downsized versions of my images. Even on your example above I can still detect the halos at the white window frames and at the wall -> sky border.

Maybe - like already suggested - adding a profile setting where each member can select the default sharpening for her/his images would be nice.

However, I prefer the new one ;-)

I see your image very sharp. The colours are intense and the details crisp. Why should Ipernity change the photo quality?
I'm more at Flickr but any time I upload a photo here I'm happy about the displayed quality.
Don't worry....your photos are fine:)
