Summer (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere) is in full swing and people are trying all sorts to keep cool. Here in the Dutch town of Almere there is one of those fountains that shoot jets of water and kids love them. Dads too it seems!
I've picked this as the Pick of the Week because I've broken the rule about chopping off heads. Not that I did it on purpose: my main goal as I raised the camera to quickly make the photograph, was to capture the spirit of the occasion. The little girl is loving it and Dad is too by the look on his face. I don't really think it matters that he's lost the top of his head.
In fact, as I thought about it while processing the image, I realised that perhaps losing his head helps the image. We can still see his smiling face and the focus remains on the little girl and the interaction between father and child.
What does everyone else think? Should I have taken just a bit more time and made sure I included Dad's head? Or is it just right as it is? Let me know.
Either way, the image reminds me once again why I do what I do. To record the emotions of the so-called ordinary people and the "little" events they are engaged in, is a real honour and a joy for me. I am grateful
