Netflix has "Searching for Sugarman".What a great documentary.

I wasn't in South Africa when every rebellious white liberal had Rodriquez' LPs in the rack alongside Bob Dylan. But I was in...1998? That long ago? And I remember, long before this documentary"framed the narrative", how the local paper (Star of Johannesburg) tried to describe the enormity of what had happened.

And I remember the reports of the concert halls jammed full of adoring fans for this failed performer who was doing demolitions in Detroit. He had no idea that he was an icon for a generation in a vibrant nation so far away.

The South Africans had their own icons...Koos Kombuis and James Phillips and Johannes Kerkorrel and so many other voices of discontent. And Rodriguez.

What a story.
