so i have to wonder why love is the antonym to hate in the dictionaries. to me they are not opposites. come share your thoughts :-)

They share to be real strong emotions. And I have come to notice that a display of hate often hints to a very close relationship between the two "opponents".
So I'm with you on this one...

Hate results from unanswered love mostly.
Thinking in antonyms for a moment, what emotion would you call "anti-love", MacKey?

this is a, somewhat, complex topic i've brought up, purposely so of course :-D i always enjoy a good discussion. but to say it briefly...

what emotion would i define as the antonym to love?!... indifference.

indifference, yes... at one end of the spectrum, at the other end, toss in: bigotry, intolerance, prejudice.
wonderful topic by the way, you gotta love how some authorities like to classify everything as either black or white...
thank you MacKey, for bringing up a thought-stimulating topic like this, it beats watching TV all weekend ;-)

indifference can come out of love as well; if you don't like a person that passionately loves you and you still respect him/her.
try another one ;-)

Here is a thought to ponder about love...Jiddu Krishnamurti was once quoted as saying " Love means the freedom from all conflict"

i don't think of indifference as an emotion
it is anti-emotion or complete lack of emotion
in a state of indifference you would not love or hate
indifference would be true objectivity ?
which humans cannot practice ?
i guess hatred can arise in the absence of love
usually brought on by attachment (ignorance) and resentment

?

very interesting, i think you said it though... "in a state of indifference you would not love or hate"... so if you don't, then it must be the opposite, or?! how often do we hate someone we don't care for? i don't tend to hate random people. maybe we just use the word hate in the wrong way.

someone who hates unknown people is usually a mad scientist in a cartoon, the one who loves the same way is usually classified as a good christian...

love concerns us through its object, if not, it's intoxication

well, if i wasn't clear then i agree with you. i don't hate people i don't know, nor do i love people i don't know.

I partly agree, sadly; although hate is possibly too strong a word for what you feel for someone you love. I'm not sure HATE is right. You can be 'in love' with someone and still hate them, but you can't love someone and hate them at the same time :)

oh wow this is loaded one huh??? :-D well I wouldn't expect anything less from you ;-D...well it kinda depends on the many levels and facets of both emotions when/if they are or become opposites...I think the base action within ourselves, our emotional life, what occurs in our heart or emotes from it, that very first initial burst...I believe at that point they are opposite...derived from the polar opposites of our emotions...dark and light...good and evil...(just giving opposite examples) hot and cold...etc etc etc. now the *grey* areas or with these emotions can't use that color name so let's say the color scales slides from red/love......to rose.....to lavendar....to purple....to......black/hate just think HOW MANY shades and hues exist between them??? so I think there are times they co-exist even...so that love that we think *should* always be good/positive...maybe isn't...like for example when two people love each other but are horribly toxic for each other...
hate we think *must* always be negative...and maybe toward another person that is true...but maybe what you said about us using the word hate incorrectly comes into play here. But there are plenty of things other humans do...or situations or actions that I can say I HATE those...and I'm perfectly capable of hatred...but I don't know that I can say I HATE (at least at this time in my life) another person...I may hate what they do/ what they've done...so going back to hating situations/actions etc. okay for a horrific example: war...I HATE it...so in this case wouldn't this hatred be positive? I think so...so then hate can be good....not always bad and/or negative. Now back to actually hating another person...I believe I could say that with all honesty if someone harmed someone I loved...I wouldn't just hate their actions, but I would *feel* hatred for *them*...and I knowing myself I would feel *good* about that hatred, but would that BE good just because I feel good about it? Only for me maybe...maybe that would still in the grand scheme of things be negative.

But indifference to me isn't an emotion...it's void...like apathy...they are choices, either deliberate choices, or in-actions from ignorance, or some defect in someone's emotional make-up. Now apathy I can say...boils my blood I HATE apathy...it's deadly...it kills...on every level.

But I do believe love at it's best truest form is what it's all about...love...true love...
(not romantic although that's nice ;-) )
it's unending...ever expanding...limitless
and hate at it's truest form IS the opposite... it's stagnant...decay...stifled.

okay omG I've rambled on AHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA so let me end with this my dear
I love your post here, your brilliant photographs, and you ♥♥♥ :-D

Dan Spielmann says:
Love and hate have one key shared element; i.e. emotional involvement in the “other”. The true opposite to that quality is indifference.

Yet, I feel an opposition between that which attracts me (love, affection) and that which repels me (hate, dislike).
