More a pop group than R&B artists, The Four Tunes (Pat Best, Jimmy Gordon, Jimmie Nabbie and Danny Owens) first recorded "I Understand (Just How You Feel)" (Pat Best) and took it into the R&B and the Billboard pop chart top ten in 1953.

Formed in 1952 as The Bob-O-Links, The G-Clefs (Teddy Scott, Chris Scott, Ilanga Scott, Tim Scott and Ray Gibson) cover hit the top ten in 1961 using "Auld Land Syne" to their advantage. Interesting to note (wikipedia) Freddy Cannon played guitar on their self-penned 1956 single "Ka-Ding-Dong". They may have sounded white but they were very much a black do-whop group.
