SimpleTech SimpleShare 250 GB Network Hard Drive- Do You Have One?All fixed thanks!

Wednesday August 13, 2008 at 01:31PM

Please!

If you have one of these devices please help me! My laptop has reached crash capacity once again. When I try to access my simple share my computer won't recognize it. I've used it before and have files stored through it somewhere! Bit of a panic here. Two days have gone by and still no access...

No pics till I figure this out!

recap. i have plugged and unplugged. shut down and restarted. run set up disk which says no NAS found. i have also been plugging this into my computer each time i used it before. not into my router. ?

Do you have the CD that came with the external hard drive ? Install the software that comes with it.

i'm going to resort to housecleaning instead of computer cleaning for a while. i'll be in and out. thanks for your suggestions.

i've been plugging this device into my computer and not my router. is a computer considered an available port? this is all very confusing to me. where is my info going? this all makes me feel very inept.
did i lose files again? oh my.

mellie, i'm a terrible housewife, the cleaning's long overdue! ( a good reason not to be married- no one to nag me about the cleaning). i've got two kids to get off into the world and things are a mess. life is very overwhelming at times. there's no worry about me washing the windows any time soon rain or shine! speaking of which it's rained and rained here all summer. i might as well be in glasgow with you.

feel better!

I support this. Men should be able to cook! (Although my own cooking skills aren't that great.)
I generally think that both sexes should be able to do all day to day household things on a decent level, and to equally partake in them. The ability to drive a car, and a small truck for moving, should be added to the list.

thanks for your help yesterday , Eike!

mad.melon replies:
exactly :) though i don't have ability to drive a car :D maybe because i don't have a car ;) as for moving, women are not very good with carrying boxes down and up the stairs...

Eike replies:
But driving the truck does not require much physical strength (nor any special qualification if it is small). Therefore I think: as men learn to cook and to wipe baby's butts, women should learn to drive trucks.
Here in Germany however, many women can't drive cars, and even more don't dare to drive trucks.

mad.melon replies:
i will drive, but what is the reason of learning how to drive when you don't have a car? ;)) i must be rich first :P

Josie Soho® replies:
i didn't learn to drive till i was 25. i was afarid i'd kill someone. then i got a job where driving was required and i taught myself to drive a standard stick shift and parallel park a huge van. necessity's the mother of invention and initiative it seems.

on another note some larger metropolitan areas in the U.S. are starting car rental services which are charged by the hour. opening up the use of a car to people who don't want to own or maintain one. Much more economical and greener for the environment.

I'm surprised to know there are modern urban women who don't drive. i suppose there are some here, though I don't know any.

mad.melon replies:
i am perfect passenger, and i'm not urban woman :P i'm a village girl and i like to walk ;)) anyway, for me man is the driver ;)) i don't have any need to have driving license :)) i'm gonna marry driver ;))

Eike replies:
But driving can be done with high heels, fancy clothes and long fingernails. Therefore I think driving all kinds of vehicles should be considered typical work for women.

mad.melon replies:
maybe i'm not woman enough :P no high heels, no fancy clothes, no long fingernails ;)) usually no make-up ;)) and honestly: i really think that call for a cab or removal company is much more efficient for someone like me :) i don't have to drive a car :) all i have to do is take care of my man :)

wow- after two hopelessly failed marriages to a controlling person of each gender. i never want to be put in the position of being at someone else's whim for my transportation or anything else!

it's not that :) i like when man is taking care of me :) and if i'm on my own, i just don't need a car, that's all :)

that's fine M.M. Not everyone needs a car. i'd be much happier without the responsibility of one. my prior circumstances dictate my need for independence. my area is also not so urban. life here is difficult without a car.

You should note that Poland and Germany, where Mad.Mellon and me grew up, are not at the forefront of female emancipation. It started as a project of upper middle class women in the UK; and I think it still shows. How Scandinavian women became so emancipated is a miracle.

In Germany hillbilly women all learn to drive because they have to, and urban women are those who refrain from driving. I sometimes think in Germany hillbilly and working class women are more emancipated than middle class women. The working class women want to become bank clerks and tax officials just like their brothers. The middle class women study History of Architecture, or Comparative Literature. After graduation they'll marry an engineer and they'll never work. (OK, most of them; some will become university professors.)

on further thought Eike, perhaps you'lll have to bring a farm girl to the city unless you can emigrate! good luck in your search for an emancipated woman. she's out there somewhere.

Hi Josie!
I suppose that you plugged the device into the router when it worked normally. Right?

With a normal Ethernet cable you can't connect the device and your computer directly (or two computers). You always need a router or switch in between. (You can however buy a special cable to connect computer and storage device directly.) As you can post these messages I guess that your router works well, so it shouldn't be the cause of your problems.

For solving computer problems my fairly computer illiterate sister calls some small company. I use Linux and never used Windows privately, so I usually can't help anyone with computer trouble.

Josie Soho® replies:
oddly enough no. it was plugged into my computer via an ethernet cable. i'm really confused now. i'm beginning to gather i've used this device completely wrong and have probably lost the files i thought i'd saved. oh boy.
Posted 16 months ago. ( permalink )
Eike replies:
Well, you might have used one of those special cables to connect your computer and the device. These cables are called crossover cables and look exactly the same as regular Ethernet cables. These crossover cables have a great potential to create confusion, because they look like regular cables but are internally different. (I have put big labels to my crossover cable so I would not use it as a regular cable.)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable

So if you changed the cable between device and computer, you have likely found the error. You need a crossover cable for the direct connection between device and computer.

Josie Soho® replies:
thank you for all your help eike. i didn't know such cables existed. there has been no cable change tho. my daughter who is more computer literate than i am is trying some things including connecting to the router. we'll see.
