So Much To Say

Monday November 12, 2007 at 05:23PM

• So little time to say it in

One of the most important lessons I learned this weekend addressed an issue I have personally and the person who taught it to me has no idea how much she impacted me. I have a problem at times allowing myself to use the title Artist for myself. The point she made was about herself but it applies to all of us across the board. She spoke about having difficulty describing what her work was as an artist. She then went on to say she'd come to the realization that she had look at her body of work from a year. Not a day, yesterday, last week or last month. She'd come to the conclusion that a year was the most reasonable amount of time to give herself. Such a logical conclusion. When I see her again I'll have to thank her in person. Thank you Mieke!

On another note, one artist in the building who's a beautiful photographer told me, "I couldn't do this for a living. I like to bang metal with hammers, I'm a mechanic." If he wasn't such a beautiful photographer I'd suggest he consider sculpture.

Currently working on six shots of the studio to make a panoramic album and listening to Stephen Marley's Hey Baby on a continuous loop ...

Happy Monday all you Artistes out there!

you know.. i don't want it to be forced, constrained... i sometimes feel like it a bit but... i'm not. i just see things, photograph them... sometimes i change sth, i try to use another technique but i don't find it as art still... actually word art for me is quite undefined....

i think you are in your twenties, i'm guessing. excuse me if i'm wrong. at that stage of life it's normal to feel that way. i did too. there was point where i threw away all my charcoal sketches from art school . life drawing's a major part of any artist's portfolio. I threw them away because I was never going to call myself an artist again. One move too many for me. ;-)

addendum: sorry about the twenties remark, that sounds limiting . what i meant was that in my youth i was making work that came into vogue many years later. don't doubt yourself no matter what. about constrained or forced i understand. i had a professor that believed creating was all about structure and making the right conditions for yourself to produce in. 37 years later I've discovered what those conditions are. ;-) it took me that long to realize that for me it meant to remain as childlike as possible through my skepticism.

night, night ,billy goat.

Having spent 16 years as a life model (and still going), i've come to at least partly understand what is meant by "Anything is art". If you choose to call it art, then who is to argue. The only thing that holds us back is ourselves.
My work is art, and some of it is arty. Also i think some of it is crap, but then someone says "Hey that's really good!" and all of a sudden it's art!
As photographers we should just go out and experiment, have some fun, and hopefully we'll enjoy the results, and even more hopefully, so will other's.

Have fun!!

there's a lot to respond to here. I'll say a bit now and add more later. Interesting to know you have worked as an artist's model. i had wondered while thinking how your confidence and naturalness in your poses are lyrically beautiful.

Hmm.. I'm a lot of things, but I've never considered myself to be a real artist. I've had artistic inclinations though, as I had originally gone to college as a fine arts major and a psychology minor, neither of which were ever finished. Even now I'm somewhat conflicted to follow one or both of my passions. One would be to throw caution to the wind and attempt to become a "professional photographer", or at least derive a sustainable income from it. The other would be to pursue psychology and help those that otherwise wouldn't have access to mental health care and living a somewhat impoverished life. Perhaps somewhere in between the two I can find some balance. I'm only now starting to like some of my work though, enough so to want to share it with others. I've no idea where I was going with this now, and must get back to work. I've less than an hour left and so much to finish.

i'll respond more later here too, cliff. from what you've said artist is your title too. it's about balance. ah , for all of us.

Here in Noho we have lots of artists working in the mental health field. So many that they struggle in both areas of their expertise. It's not an easy choice deciding the best path. I just quit my job as a daycare provider last June to pursue my art full time. It's a little too soon to know how it will turn out. I have an associates degree in fine arts. I don't think it's the education that makes the artist it's the passion to create that determines.

my goodness. RELAX! we'll talk about drawing later. if you want to be an artist you are. and if you have the eye to photograph you will learn to draw. okay so we're talking about drawing now... rule number one get LARGE paper and draw freely with big bold strokes, charcoal and news print paper is best . don't be stingy be loose. squint at your object to see the strongest lines then draw those. if you're using your own leg as a model for instance just draw your thigh and make it fill the page. charcoal would be messy in bed tho. ;-) considering your injury. anyway after you draw the strongest lines you see- squint again and then draw and so on till you like what you've done.
if you don't like the first one start another. change your subject if the first one doesn't work . cheap materials- so be liberal with them. ok?
