feedback request

in spite of the fact that i swore i would keep this stream uncluttered and for original photographs only...

i am thinking that perhaps i should reneg and post some of my paintings as well...if ipernity allowed for the creation of two accounts i'd probably start a second account devoted to this work

reasons for...

-that's where most of my creative energy has been focused for the last 10 years...

-i have a lot of inventory that i'd like to promote

-i'm running shy of quality photos that i consider worthy of this portfolio stream

reasons against...

-this is a photo site

-i don't want this stream to become a dog's breakfast like my flickr account..

for those of you not familiar with my aerosol paintings check these links...

http://danarichardson.net

http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/yourgal...

perhaps it's just enough that i let some of you know that i actually paint as well...

you can create a separate account if you want. i did. i have this one and one that doesn't allow comments so i can use it as a portfolio ( www.melpomene.ipernity.com ).

really...i thought i read in the TOS that it was one account per person...however i suppose one could easily use a second email address to open a new account...

that opens an entirely different issue of alias and hoax accounts...which is definitely something that should be left to another blog entry...

I think the real issue is how you want to curate your work. If properly organized the mixture should not end up a dog account. You may want to put in a group of work then go back to photos. But enter your posting with more deliberation then i think you will be ok. You can have a second account but then that means splitting your energies to what 4 or five places. Is that really worth it?

thx Larry...you are suggesting that i load all the paintings as a one shot deal and get it over with...

i'll take that under advisement...let see how a few others feel

frankly...in many ways i'm now wishing that i had spent more time over the last twelve months cultivating my prospects on the saatchi site...in the last year it's become far more interactive...with chat options...a photography specific section...image showdowns and even an on-line sales platform which takes no commisions and has built-in paypal links...

what it lacks is tech support...my account seems bugged and i haven't been able to find out how to access any of these new options...but i'll try again tomorrow

Actually I am not saying to post all your paintings at once, what I am thinking is that you need to curate your work very deliberately. That is, you need to pick your work carefully and determine why you group work together or as a stream or interleave your postings in what manner you choose. But make your choices deliberate and thought out. You may pick a theme, a timeframe or ones that show a particular direction in your work. And when you post, perhaps more information with the pictures, share more of your intentions along with the visuals.

But that takes me back to a more fundemental point, what is your goal on each of your websites. That to me is the real starting point, if you want to market your work, then I suspect flickr and ipernity while giving you some exposure don't really market your works. I may be wrong but I guess there are better ways to do that, one thought is making connections online with more influential sites, I don't know how well the saatchi site does for you. And I do know there is a whole body of material and experience on marketing oneself as an artist. But I don't even know if that is your purpose online. So that puts it back on you, what is your goal? At the end of the day, what do you want from us the viewers? I think that will give you the answers to the other issues.

ta ta for now

Well, why couldn't you open up another account...not as an alias per say, but let people know it's you and that this is your art page? Yes, this is a photography site, but I've seen people post photos of their art work here as well. Some even join to post there music. or just to blog.

I say you should go for it! Your paintings are unbelievable...you should share them:)

thx Jo...although i believe that one or two insightful intelligent comments on a post is better than all the visits in the world....something about visit tracking counters make us all sensitive to traffic...at least that's the case for me...

generally speaking i've found viewers on these sites are less interested in painting than photos...and posting a photo of a painting really tends to knock the wind out of the old sails...

these sites so far as i'm concerned are all about regular maintenance...regular posts...making regular comments and answering your mail...

and that's probably the reason i will stay away from posting paintings here...it's really a stream that i would like to use as a reference to outside viewers for viewing the photos...

in a way i'm glad my flickr stream is restricted...because there are so many different things going on there...it's almost impossible for the first time viewer to figure out what's what...how could they...i don't have a clue and i've been her for over a year...hehehe

i appreciate all the kind comments...but the more i think about it..i think less is more for this stream...
lean and mean ipernity stream...

and as i said...i'm sure they said one account per member...maybe it's not enforced

Its one free account per member so you can have one free and one pro and be just fine, or as many pro accounts as you like, Ipernity is about sharing art more than anything and you can build a set of your paintings on this account perhaps a few to see how it goes, its your site and you can delete or add what you like, experiement and see what happens.

I for one don't think this is a photo only site. It actively promotes being a "document" sharing site- be it a blog, a music file, a video file... It only stands to reason that paintings are included.,

Cant wait to see your painting, Dana! Post away, right here, be PROUD! :)

As for clutter? That's what sets are for in my opinion....

I didn't even realize you painted.. on to seek them out! :)
