your favorite word

Friday July 4, 2008 at 05:29PM

what is your favorite word? sometimes we have different favorites in different languages, but me i love the words "among" and "beyond" in any language. actually don't know them in many... in german it is "zwischen" (which also means between) and "jenseits". am actually quite partial to "jenseits"... in french it is "parmi" and "au-delà"...

which is closely connected to my favorite time of day, twilight. i love the word too. in german even more "zwielicht" but also "dämmerung"... pure poesie. it is that time that stands still, the magic hour, when things are born. change. shift. unnoticed. when rocks move without anyone seeing it clearly. the corner of your eye vision only.

to my chagrin i learned the other day that there is no french equivalent. is that true? can that be true?

When i was at school my favourite word was "turd". There were turds spewing forth from my mouth everywhere i went. It wasn't nice!

At the moment i think my favourite word is "discombobulated". It's a great word for what it describes, but also, it's a damned good word to get your mouth around.

Marinkel * replies:
turd is a nice one, especially cause you can also write it terd, though that s wrong ! discombobulated seems mean cause why use a word that s confusing to describe your state of confusion? just plain mean methinks !

hmmm ... but there are so many ... I love words!!! ... well, cued-up by your Twilight I would certainly put 'darkness' up as a contender ... as in 'body heat air in the velvet darkness', Springsteen's 'Darkness' (on the edge of town), associate with: chocolate (yum), gothic (yum2), snuggling under the duvet (yum3), having a cigarette in the middle of the night in my garden on a summer's night. ... A Midsummer Night's Dream!

... Lover's darkness
... moonlit darkness ... stop me now!!!!

i ve been liking the dark much more than the light these days, it seems darkness allows the inner eye to roam more freely, like a dark empty canvas. reminding me of the drawings i used to do with wax, first using the colors of the rainbow, then covering them with black. afterwards etching a drawing into the black, revealing only glimpses of color. that is darkness to me, what it hides and sometimes reveals.

my favorite word was "Sehnsucht"its a favorite word of me before i undestood the meaning.i get the blues when you wisper the word in my ear
Posted 4 months ago. ( permalink )
Marinkel * says:
sehnsucht has that doubling effect, of addiction to be longing for something. seems one just wants to long rather than to have. which can be fatal in view of not ever wanting and thus not getting what one wants but rather longing always for something that is unattainable...

as for favourite words, this is a question i adore, since i loooove words and languages, but it's hard to answer.
- in Finnish, it's definitely "uskomatonta" (meaning 'unbelieveable') i like it because of the way it sounds.
- in English, i think "labelable" is funny to pronounce :D
- for Dutch, my native language, i got some words from the Antwerp dialect i love: "boemmerskonte" (translatable as a "shithole", though less vulgar) and "goesting" (lust for something - not sexually - i can't find an English equivalent)
(do edibles count? if so, i'd definitely go for 'tiramisu')
