| beam me up |
about an year ago i discovered "flickr". very fast i was fascinated by the views offered there : people from all over the world sharing their points of view, their art and opinions. i decided to be a part of it too and started a pro account. i met the most wonderful people there, people with whom i shared their every day life and also special moments. we talked and discussed as much as fooling around. this time means very much to me, a time filled with precious memories. i learned a lot and i experienced a lot... the moments spent there also helped through difficult times in my life.
the development during the last months was a tremendous disappointment for me. in the process of protesting against censorship i found out more about yahoo and its bigote policy. a policy which has fatal consequences for lots of people involved e.g. in china.
the only possible consequence for me is to quit flickr and not support yahoo in any way. my pro account there expires in less than a week ( on the 10th of sept. ). i'll need the following days to clear up that place and make my peace with my messed emotions concerning this part of my life. i'm missing the wonderful friends i met there, people who have decided to stay on flickr for their own reasons.
therefore my activity on ipernity will be much less than usual. i'll be back ! keep your fingers crossed for me and a safe return from this sad transdimensional journey...
the worst part is done now... i still need a little time to digest the last days, but i'll be back like i was, soon ! then i'll also answer your comments in this blog. thanks for your support, your good vibes and spacy words !!!

And then doing the deletions felt like a chore that I could not wait to finish. I was glad I cleaned it up rather than letting hundreds of photos remain but hidden somewhere on servers - no regrets. You will come through the process just fine. Like others, I look forward to seeing you back here : )

I like ipernity. I am one of those here that has asked for groups, several times. I do hope we will be able to NOT let things evolve in the right direction. I would much rather not have groups than see us go the one way street called Flickr Highway. I don't much care how many come and see each shot that I upload. Right now I am uploading shots I used to have on flickr. Many of them are from my travel, they tell a story and are as much there for myself as for others.
I am happy to be here and good riddance flickr.
We will beam you down to us any time you need, just holler.

And at the moment this place would have even more to criticize concerning usability, features and member activity than flickr. But it offers some features flickr doesn't have, like the blogging function, and it is young so maybe it will soon have some more attractive possibilities. So no reason to leave ipernity at the moment.
Another point is this good/evel thing which is especially so popular to apply in the internet business. But I don't think that this are suitable categories in this case. Yahoo is not as evil as google is good, they are both just companies trying to make money worldwide, also in China. Are you sure not wearing cloths made by children in India? Not driving a car where parts are produced in China? Have you never bought toys made in China, cause they are so cheap? It s a hard thing to be 'good' in our globalized world...

But, I hope you sort yourself out! Of course. We must each make our own choices; but we must all consider what the results of those choices will be for our friends and relatives.

you know that i tried to change something on fl...r before i left. taking this decision wasn't easy and i spent sleepless nights and shed tears because of it. so please don't talk like that.
but how can you compare a company with a country ? fl...r isn't a country and i'm
not their citizen. i'm curious to know what you're doing to change the situation concerning the fl...r / yahoo policies.
i know about the consequences of fl...r's / yahoo's activities in china and i won't support this. concerning the results of my decision : are you talking about my friends on fl...r ? i miss them - a lot - but my decision has no consequences for them.
sorry harry - i don't understand you in this point and i makes me feel bad

To say that someone deciding to leave a community has no consequences for those who remain is evidently not so - I am the proof ;-)
What I wrote was really a response to what I read on this page - I felt there was a point of view missing. But hey - I'm happy to delete it and won't be offended if you ask me :-)
