beam me up - the story

Tuesday September 4, 2007 at 07:25PM

beam me up
beam me up

about an year ago i discovered "flickr". very fast i was fascinated by the views offered there : people from all over the world sharing their points of view, their art and opinions. i decided to be a part of it too and started a pro account. i met the most wonderful people there, people with whom i shared their every day life and also special moments. we talked and discussed as much as fooling around. this time means very much to me, a time filled with precious memories. i learned a lot and i experienced a lot... the moments spent there also helped through difficult times in my life.

the development during the last months was a tremendous disappointment for me. in the process of protesting against censorship i found out more about yahoo and its bigote policy. a policy which has fatal consequences for lots of people involved e.g. in china.

the only possible consequence for me is to quit flickr and not support yahoo in any way. my pro account there expires in less than a week ( on the 10th of sept. ). i'll need the following days to clear up that place and make my peace with my messed emotions concerning this part of my life. i'm missing the wonderful friends i met there, people who have decided to stay on flickr for their own reasons.

therefore my activity on ipernity will be much less than usual. i'll be back ! keep your fingers crossed for me and a safe return from this sad transdimensional journey...

the worst part is done now... i still need a little time to digest the last days, but i'll be back like i was, soon ! then i'll also answer your comments in this blog. thanks for your support, your good vibes and spacy words !!!

I'm sorry for your disappointing experience with F**ckr .. I was active there for a year and had made some wonderful contacts and saw many great images.
Most of those persons have fallen out of contact. I hope that you'll hurry back and that all parts of your creative mind stay in one piece .. I know that you'll have many friends here .. All the best ..

Ich kann es gut nachfühlen, was Dich bewegt. Ich habe am 14. Juni meinen flickr-Account gelöscht, als ich erkannte, womit ich es dort zu tun habe. Ich habe es wie folgt beschrieben

Ulrich, I read your article and you summed it up so very well. So very much like my own experience. First, the enthusiasm, and then the deep disappointment.

I spent unforgettable moments on Flickr and thanks to it I met some beautiful and unique souls I wouldn't have met elsewhere... But things can change, as much as in loving couples sometimes: the person you thought you knew is not really that person at all... Fortunately I was not married with Flickr... but only connected with some people there. And I'm still connected with them because "real" friendship goes beyond everything ;-)

I too met many wonderful people on f*****. I had a great time and my experience almost parallels yours. I also was disappointed with the way things went and am sure will continue to go as long as people continue to support such policies by remaining silent and buying pro accounts. My pro account had about 10 months before it expired but I decided to quit and I did. Many of those friends I had on f***** joined me here and I met new ones. There is life after f***** :)

I know what you mean Mo! Censr...as I now call it was once so beloved to me...but for the reasons you state...I only go there to view my friends streams that have chosen to stay...my pro account doesn't expire for a long time yet...haven't decided if I should just quit it anyway...but of course I won't renew it and I too have cut off anything pertaining to Yahoo as well...
Please hurry back...I know you miss your friends from over there...but you have new ones here that want to see too! So please don't take too long!
all my fingers crossed for you sweetheart!

Sherry xoxo (one of those new friends that will miss you! ;-))) )

I don't know I think "Home is where your heart is" Mo. Sad so many will loose out on a great opportunity just because of typical bad politics. Having worked for a few large corporations I kinda expected issues. It was just a matter of time before someone would screw up a good thing. Guess I never took "fl***r seriously was one of the reasons I never went pro. A) I don't like dropping money down a bottomless pit without knowing who is in charge. B) Why pay to post your nice images just to have someone steal them when you can take that money and get your own site? C) Although I met a lot of great talented people in F***r most have left to their own site some are here. Guess it all depends what your looking for in life? I like diversity as I am not one for putting all my marbles in one basket so I like to visit other sites. The main reason I visited there was because I found it a great medium of exploring and observing, others with similar interest.

Ahh...my account expired last week and I empathize...in the weeks prior to that I went through hundreds of photos and deleted them. At first it was easy, and then it harder to do, to delete images that had treasured comments with them. There were a few teary moments when some people expressed dismay etc. as they realized I really was cleaning house and moving on. It passed.

And then doing the deletions felt like a chore that I could not wait to finish. I was glad I cleaned it up rather than letting hundreds of photos remain but hidden somewhere on servers - no regrets. You will come through the process just fine. Like others, I look forward to seeing you back here : )

It felt wonderful to delete all my shots on flickr, all but three. I kept them there so that people know why I left.
I like ipernity. I am one of those here that has asked for groups, several times. I do hope we will be able to NOT let things evolve in the right direction. I would much rather not have groups than see us go the one way street called Flickr Highway. I don't much care how many come and see each shot that I upload. Right now I am uploading shots I used to have on flickr. Many of them are from my travel, they tell a story and are as much there for myself as for others.
I am happy to be here and good riddance flickr.
We will beam you down to us any time you need, just holler.

I certainly will not leave flickr. Sure, one can criticize lots of things there, but that you can everywhere. And if this place is growing, there will appear the same or similar problems. So of course one can ever be on the run, looking for a better place. But I prefer staying and making the best out of it.

And at the moment this place would have even more to criticize concerning usability, features and member activity than flickr. But it offers some features flickr doesn't have, like the blogging function, and it is young so maybe it will soon have some more attractive possibilities. So no reason to leave ipernity at the moment.

Another point is this good/evel thing which is especially so popular to apply in the internet business. But I don't think that this are suitable categories in this case. Yahoo is not as evil as google is good, they are both just companies trying to make money worldwide, also in China. Are you sure not wearing cloths made by children in India? Not driving a car where parts are produced in China? Have you never bought toys made in China, cause they are so cheap? It s a hard thing to be 'good' in our globalized world...

Well, you know my opinion, Mo. I agree with Manganite. For now I'm in two places and I still have a long time to decide before my flickr account expires in June 2008. But in the meantime I'm enjoying it here, and I know I don't have to hope that you'll be back - I KNOW you will! :-) And yes, it was you who convinced me to join Ipernity. Thanks to 3 sites I have hardly any time now. LOL.

Mo, I am so sad that so many left Flickr. I have always run my life by the maxim that, if you find yourself in a bad place, it is your duty to make it better, not to abandon it. If everyone in a country left because its government was behaving badly, this would be a bad thing because nobody would be left to maintain the 'right' piont of view.

But, I hope you sort yourself out! Of course. We must each make our own choices; but we must all consider what the results of those choices will be for our friends and relatives.

harry, it makes me sad to read these lines. really you should know me better
you know that i tried to change something on fl...r before i left. taking this decision wasn't easy and i spent sleepless nights and shed tears because of it. so please don't talk like that.
but how can you compare a company with a country ? fl...r isn't a country and i'm
not their citizen. i'm curious to know what you're doing to change the situation concerning the fl...r / yahoo policies.
i know about the consequences of fl...r's / yahoo's activities in china and i won't support this. concerning the results of my decision : are you talking about my friends on fl...r ? i miss them - a lot - but my decision has no consequences for them.

sorry harry - i don't understand you in this point and i makes me feel bad

Harry Harris says:
I'm sorry you don't understand, Mo.. but it is no reason to feel bad. However you do seem to have picked on certain parts of what I wrote in order to take offence. I know you had a hard time leaving Flickr and didn't imply otherwise. I did not compare Flickr to a country - I used the example of the country to support the previous sentence. And there is little that can be done, I've mailed Flickr and participated in the forums - but what would I achieve by leaving? If I am supporting their policies by staying, am I supporting my University's policies by staying there?

To say that someone deciding to leave a community has no consequences for those who remain is evidently not so - I am the proof ;-)

What I wrote was really a response to what I read on this page - I felt there was a point of view missing. But hey - I'm happy to delete it and won't be offended if you ask me :-)

Many of us moved over from flickr for these reasons. In addition to the old friends who moved over there are new friends to meet here, people I did not meet there. I have left a signpost there but will not be back there. Let's make this place everything we want it to be!

Good read Mo. It must have been a real wrench to quit. :-(
I hope you're happy and thriving here now :-)

I posted a Blog with my own thoughts / position on this last wee so it was interesting to read through this again.
