i did a similar blog post for choice of cameras (www.ipernity.com/blog/jonward/63631). but this is a better questions. I cannot simply say why not.
for me, i guess it is the closest thing i have to meditation. I just see (and normally in B&W!) frames and shades and tones and photos in everything when i am in the mood. no thinking, just feeling. It allows me to see beauty in things not apparent, to record how amazing the world can be, in positive or negative ways. it's an outlet for creativity, and expression. most of all....it's fun.
Basically, because I enjoy it.
I am a visual person, but I can't make a decent drawing,
so photography is very good.
Also it makes you look and think about reality,
you don't really need a camera to look and think, but it helps.
I think the camera is a chance to see the world with different eyes. But learning to see in this way... I cannot imagine it's possible to learn it without the camera.
And then we can be lucky if we can see the world more sensible without a camera.

Not for living.
But for life. My life.

One photographer said once
"If i knew how to tell what i think, i wouldn't make photo"
I think it's a similar reason ...
