What is Ipernity?

1. Purpose

Ipernity is a website offering free and paid multimedia sharing and social networking services. The site is designed for both authors/artists and families/friends, and allows publishing and sharing in the same space of various types of digital content such as: blogs, photos, videos and audio files. (Wikipedia definition)

It was created by two French programmers: Christophe Ruelle and Christian Conti

Brief history

The project was established in 2005 in the south of France. It required 2 years of programming and testing. On May 2006 an alpha version of the site went online, Ipernity was updated to a beta release in April 2007.

2. 2. Benefits and problems

You can write blogs and people can easily add comments to your blogs

You can easily share photos and put them into albums

You can add audio files and videos

You can add people to your network

You can see who visited you

You can see whether the people in your network uploaded new photos, new posts.

Problems: even though it is free there are some additional features that are not free, for example with a free account they limit the size of your monthly uploads, you might not be able to download some documents and you can’t download photos at the maximum size for free.

3. How is it used?

First you have to create an account, which is very easy. You just have to type in your name, your email-address, etc and choose a password. Then you can click on Blog to start writing something or click on My Space, then Upload and you can upload a photo very easily. Then you can find pages from other people and click Add to your network. You can use RSS to see easily whether comments have been added to your favourite blogs. Click on In your space and you can see whether someone made comments on your posts or photos. You can tag people in your photos, etc.

4. 4. Evaluate how easy it is to use on these points : affordability, set-up difficulty, reliability

If you are a heavy user you might like to add some features for which you have to pay, but many people enjoy it without paying anything. The monthly limit to your uploads is 200MB. If you want to upload HD videos which are bigger than that you will have to pay to upgrade to a Pro account.

It is very easy to set up. Furthermore the interface is in different languages, so you don’t have to know English to be able to use Ipernity. For example you can choose Esperanto as the language for the interface. This means that Ipernity is very popular among Esperanto speakers.

Reliabilility: it is very reliable. I haven’t experienced any problems with it. The only thing I can mention is that it doesn't seem to be fully compatible with the Microsoft Word formatting.

5.
5.1 why a person might use this application

A person might use it to upload photos to show to family and friends. They might use it to write blogs and get comments from other people. They might put up poems that they want people from all over the world to read. Your blogs can be seen by everyone who comes across them or you can set the settings so that only the members of your network can find them. You can use it to let people know about upcoming events, etc.

5.2 A publisher of books for example, might use it to get people to know about their recent publications, for readers to be able to make comments or suggestions.

5.3A group might use it to announce their activities, to get the members of the group to communicate, to post photos of group activities, but the people who use Ipernity are, I think, mostly individuals.
