Uploading Old Flickr Stuff

Sunday April 20, 2008 at 09:55AM

I'm in the process of uploading all of my old Flickr stuff (stuff that is no longer there). It is taking a while, and for some reason PictureSync doesn't upload the metadata when exporting from Aperture. Hell, it may work, but the interface for PictureSync is so funked up that I have no idea how to enable the option to do something so basic as include the frackin' EXIF metadata with my photos. Why is the PictureSync interface so horrible? Oh I wish that the excellent Flickr Export for Aperture plugin would work with Ipernity. From what I can tell, the APIs of Flickr and Ipernity are similar, but not enough that the plugin maker will deal with it. It is very frustrating to have my entire history of photography show up as being taken in the last couple days. I've talked to both Ipernity guys and the plugin maker guy and never managed to get it going. Which is a shame, because the plugin is awesome. Between the way Flickr treats its users, and the inadequate upload tools for Ipernity, it almost makes me want to just forget about uploading photos to the web anymore. Or maybe I should just write my own Aperture export plugin for Ipernity. But that would take a while. And it would probably suck. But it looks like my only option. That or just give up altogether.

What kind of metadata doesn't it upload? It seem to work for me ... but I agree on the comments about the user interface, I would like it redone. I've started to do this in a slightly different way, I export the pictures from Aperture to files, then I use PictureSync to annotate them (I usually want different comments that I have in Aperture) and then I upload them. The advantage is that I can upload them to my personal Gallery 2 site + flickr + Ipernity without too much work.

But I do miss FlickrExport, it makes such a difference.

Well, first and foremost is the image date. Everything says it was taken on the date and time I uploaded it. ALso, usually tehre is a link called "View Exif properties of this photo" in the lower right on the photo pages. This doesn't exist on the most recently uploaded photos. I guess I can#t blame it on Picture sync, but it It is some combination of Picture Sync and APerture 2.1 or a change at Ipernity. Using the web-based uploader works just fine, but that is slow and doesn't automagically use my IPTC data as tags, headlines & captions.

Hmm, I played with it a little and you're correct. If I let PictureSync select the photo in Aperture and export it from there, there is no EXIF info. But if I export from Aperture to files and then use PictureSync to upload then the EXIF info shows up.
