About...

Tuesday July 31, 2007 at 08:52AM

I have no clue about photography. My new Olympus E500 is collecting dust because I don't know how to use it. Need some advice and I am afraid I will actually never get it. In the meantime, I am exploiting my point and shoot Casio Exilim 500.(Why so many 500?? :O )

In any case, since I have taken photography as a new hobby, I noticed that I have developped an increasing interest for those little details in life that people usually do not or want to notice, those corners that people have forgotten, those things that time has tortured and that people ignore as they have lost a bit of their original beauty(or so it seems...), those that are let aside because they are supposed to be ugly or not worth it, those that show a bittersweet side of life and its circumstances. Are they really that hideous and deprived of charm? I do not think so. A closer look to them with affection and a second thought about what it is, what it was and what it is becoming makes me fall in love and picture decay. And then there are those shots of shadows and visual games that a new perspective from reality gives and that is available to those willing to see them. Ah, the wonders of playing with your eyes and brain! It is like looking for shapes in clouds, but taking our terrenial environment and observing it silently with a kids mind...

I find them captivating.

As I see exquisite many of the conventional beauties(sunset, animals, plants,...). Maybe it is that I am not good enough(YET!! :P ) to make those stunning landscapes pictures or I cannot use any of those big post-production tools(YET! :P ), and the only thing I can do is admire those in the work of others-at the end of the day the big photographers need admirers that are not able to picture the same way they do...-, or maybe it is because I like the fact that those impressive decadent and majestous forgotten wonders do need little manipulation because they have already been manipulated by Light, Space, Nature and Time and that, I find absolutely fascinating...

I search for them, I crave for them, I want to pay homage to them, that is all I have to offer for now...

Just that. Not much, but a lot at the same time.

I hope you enjoy it, I certainly do!

Get the thing out and play with it, you will get it sooner or later, and then you will be glad.

Isn't it interesting how the hobby of photography sensitizes you to everything around you. I think it's wonderful that you are enjoying your hobby so much, your photos show the interest and you will just keep getting better.

Good luck you are awesome

You are right, I should get it out and play with it eve if I will look like completely lost and not knowing what I am doing... :S

And yes, photography does sensitize you a lot... Makes you see beauty or look for it everywhere! :)

It's the same set of emotions I have from the moment I (re)falled in love with photography.
And I have the same set of problems with my DSLR: 'til now I'm only satisfied with some bw shots and I'm unable to understand how much of that depends on the (bad) quality of the standard zoom lenses of the EOS 350D kit and how much in my inability to control manually all parameters (I usually shot in manual or in aperture priority)

One advice. While you fight with the "folleto explicativo" (why are they always so boring and full of crap?) keep shooting in automatic. Automatic but manual focus. This will give you correct exposures most of times. With correct exposition you can get almost everything in post production, photoshop or simpler (highly reccomended). I mainly do all with 1. automatic levels; 2. quick bright contrast
I just spent more than 5 minutes post production in woman portrait. (I wonder why, if they spent so few timing making up and choosing dresses and shoes...)

Don't be daunted. Start with apertaure priority mode. Take twent pics of the same thing with different settings. Compare and take notes. The change the lighting. Take the same set of shots. Take more notes.

Simple hint. The lower the F number, the more dilated the "pupil" of the lense is, and the more light you can let in. You also get a shorter depth of field (aka DOF) - where the distance between the bit in focus and the blurred bit is short (i.e short DOF). Higher the F number the more is in focus (both fore and background).

Experiment. Have patience, have fun. Learn from your mistakes.
