A fake Polaroid? Anyone...?

Sunday October 26, 2008 at 07:41PM

Get this great little application and re-develop your pictures as a fake and only digital polaroid photo.
With dirt, dust and finger prints.

One thing: it's only for macs.

Great!
But remember ... real polaroids are much more cooler. And real art.

Die sind natürlich viel cooler. Die musst Du irgendwie konservieren. Till infinity and...

In a world where everything is fake, what value does reality have? Plastic flowers have no scent.

Dink replies:
That's true... real polaroids are much more cooler. We all know that. But this here is just for the digital fun. To quickly spice up some picture galleries you make ... or for collages or whatever ...

And I know it's getting harder to differentiate what's a real polaroid and what's not.

So this app is bad ... just a little bit.

manuptheroad says:
Fair enough, but it's so frustrating that nothing can be trusted anymore. Everything (or at least an imitation of it) is just one download away, apparently. As an artist it makes me want to throw my computer out of the window and get back to basics - put my trust in simple marks made with charcoal on paper - something that can't be faked - to feel the texture of the paper against my hand. You know?
Posted 14 months ago. ( permalink )
Dink replies:
That's right. "One download away..." Or some klicks in Photoshop or any other picture/video manipulating application. And you're right about feeling art. See it in real. Smell it.

I feel ashamed now. I shouldn't have posted this app here.

And I have those moments too. When I want to give away my computer.
Back to the roots. But then... some things could only be done with it (websites, ...).

Another thing: look at my fake polaroid and the one from Knut. They have the same dingy framing. The same boring algorithm. Maybe it's easy to identify them as fake. Hopefully.
Time will tell.

'Fake versus reality' - it's a whole subject in itself, and a very difficult and interesting area for artists to explore. There's no single right way, I know - but I look at my friend growing his own willow and weaving it into the most beautiful baskets, and I'm envious of his certainty - you can't 'fake' a willow basket! I guess the challenge is to be true to the materials you use, whatever they are: willow, charcoal, paper, Photoshop. . . :)

I think that's ok. See it like manuptheroad said: "the challenge is to be true to the materials you use, whatever they are".

The simple Polaroid, without dirt and fingerprints, is available also in Picnik (integrated with Ipernity) and in Picasa ;)
And yes, real things are better than fakes (but usually more difficult...)

Dink replies:
Ah ok. Thanks. I've never tried to use Picnik.
And you're right too: it's not easy but it would be more like handicraft. In some way. Somehow.
