PC Video Converter? (AVI to MPEG or MOV etc)

Do you mean you want an encoder which can compress a huge DV AVI file in order to upload it here?

I'm new at Ipernity, so I don't know which video formats are accepted. Pocket DivX encoder can make small DivX videos, and it's free.

hey ich bin auch schon ewig nach der suche nach nem guten free converter... aber nix zu finden... falls du einen findest kannst du mir bescheid geben.... das gilt auch fuer mich dito...

First off: PC != Windows
Secondly: AVI, MPEG, MOV are "merely" the containers, more important are the actual codecs for the audio- and videostream.
Currently for video H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is the codec to pick for its efficiency in compression along with great quality.
For audio Advanced Audio Coding is widely used at the moment.
Thus I recommend the combination: H.264 + AAC

On a Linux platform I use mencoder with the appropriate libs installed. So a simple command line like
mencoder example.avi -ovc x264 -oac faac -o compressed-example.avi
would already do the job.

For Windows users I would recommend "Mediacoder":
mediacoder.sourceforge.net

Regarding dimensions, stick to PAL 720x576, whereas maybe already half the resolution will suffice for internet video portals, i. e. 352x288.
I know it would really be 360 width but encoders work best with dimensions divisible by 16.

okay right, i was talking about windows. and i guess in 97,5% of all cases a pc is coming with windows and is still running with it.

thing is i want to keep it EASY, i know about codecs and things, but this here's for a friend who doesnt.
it should be as easy as 1-2-3, you know?!

somehow it only exports mp4 without errors,i tried xvid/avi, or mpeg but it didnt work, will have to read the manual cause this tool looks best so far ...

aber das sieht echt ganz gut aus. ist ja eigentlich nur ein GUI für andere tools.

Du kannst auch Virtual Dub probieren. Ich habe keine eigenen Erfahrungen, weil ich nichts mit Videos mache.

aaaaaahh ja, ich erinnere mich. virtual dub hab ich früher auch benutzt, allerdings ist es nicht grad einfach für jeden, die oben genannten tools hab ich gestern probiert. das sah schon so aus wie es soll, mit dicken buttons und so, :D dass man nichts falsch machen kann

Ich habe mal einen gefunden der SUPER(c) heisst. Der hat überraschenderweise ziemlich gut funktioniert und konvertiert in so ziemlich alles. Die Seite ist aber ziemlich krank und man muss sich x-mal zu dem Link ganz unten durchkämpfen bis man endlich zum Download gelangt.
