Cataloging-Tool for OSX?

Thursday August 9, 2007 at 08:49PM

Can any of you Mac-users suggest a cataloging software?

I couldn't find any free one, but installed and tested the trial versions of these three

I like CDFinder best, cause of its features.
Guess i will buy this one to get rid of my DVD/CD chaos, or at least know how and where to find something in my hundreds of backup DVDs.

Do you know any other tools? I liked WhereIsIt? for Windows but there seems to be no OSX Version.

edit: blogged about testing in german

I've always used, CD Finder, it's good, reliable and easy to use. Recently I'm starting to rely more on the features of OS X though by indexing any CD or DVD backup and then using Spotlight to search for stuff.

Here's an article I found that goes through the process:

thanks Julian, i hoped you would read this, cause i thought you would have similar "problems" ... spotlight keeps getting really REALLY slow here and i heard this from others as well, i need an easy and fast yet powerful tool. tagging, or at least adding comments and /or keywords should be possible.

the article seems to be very "hardcore" with unix. commands, i do understand and can use these but it's not easy and nice enough i think :) there MUST be better ways.

to be honest I don't find myself searching through stuff much, I back up client work to discs for that client only, and use multi session. So when looking for something, there's not a lot of places to go look. I back up my own stuff to external drives, as I need to get at it a lot more. My really old stuff is on CD Finder, and newer stuff I have tried the method I mentioned, can't say I've needed to test it though.

I would go with CD Finder, it is more elegant and as I said, easy and reliable. I used to use Retrospect before that, for automated back up and search.

yes, a good backup-concept is way more important than the tools anyway. but i DO have a lot of DVDs now with several backups, some online-backups as well, external drives etc. would be great if i could just use spotlight or another tool to search through all the shit i ever saved, wherever... my brains are too small ;-))
thanks anyway Julian! :)

I had personally been using Tri-Catalog, but that was back on OS 9. Other than that I pretty much follow Julian's approach. After all, if I have to juggle discs then I might as well just go through them manually. And like Julian said: Everything is catalogued by client, so I know where to look without having to do searches.

1. external harddiscs are full - no money for new ones
2. i want several backup techniques, to make sure at least ONE is working
3. i have about 300 old backup cds/dvds i cannot just throw away
4. some software "needs" to be on a dvd / image to be installed
5. mp3s on an external drive wont play in my car
...
CDFinder seems to be the slowest one of all.
yes, i have seen the tools listed at version tracker, that's where i found some others ( i don't like )

thanks Werner!
