it's funny, how people are impressed if someone calls himself a "professional" photographer, painter, actor - whatever.
For me it only means that someone earns his or her money with their creativity - nothing more.
Regarding to my own definition I'm NOT a professional photographer (only a fanatic amateur) but I'm a professional graphic designer.
I still have no idea how my camera works and - embarassing enough - for quite a while I only used the "automatic button" to get reasonable photos. I'm glad that I know everything about Photoshop to compensate that lack of knowledge and make some nice pictures :-))
I don't care if someone is a professional or not as long as they have interesting creations. I've seen many "professionals" who produce the worst crap you can imagine and - on the other hand - I know "amateurs" where I'm in awe of their skills and talent.
