A sad start of the morning

Monday April 7, 2008 at 06:12AM

Another virtual friend has gone...

When I connected to my homepage, today, I saw Annjin's avatar turned to the default icon.

A very sad discovery, because Ann was one of the first artists I met on Ipernity and I didn't know her from the Flickr era.

In the last week there was a post on her blog about disappearing members (perhaps it is still on What's Hot...). In her words I found a great disillusion about Ipernity's future and this move out of the game don't surprise me so much, but anyway for me it is a painful situation when I see disappear a person with whom I had almost daily contacts in the last year. We have other ways to keep in touch and I'm sure she will walk our streams as anonymous visitor from time to time.

I feel that Ipernity is living a growth crisis: too similar to Flickr to avoid comparisons, too different to satisfy who's searching for a Flickr clone (but without the dreaded Yahoo 'infamy mark').

I love Ipernity community and, at the same time, I can live without: I need a place to express myself and Ipernity is a good technologic platform (as a former programmer I have my websites with installed blogs, CMS, wiki, gallery and so on, but Ipernity take away all the hassles of maintaining such a software mess...).

I hope this hemorrhage of familiar faces will come to an end and I wish Team Ipernity will have far-sightedness in choosing next moves...

My head keeps telling me this is (virtual) life, my heart keeps suffering...

I am sad and a bit perplexed. I am not sure what the issue is. I am just here to share my photos and to look at yours. Sometimes I comment, Sometimes I don't as time and opinion permit, but I am always interested in what you all are doing.

This site gives me a reason to go out and take more each day, because someone looks at them. I have been taking photos for over 30 years now and I don't see much point in continuing to do so unless I show them.

It is sad when an active friend leaves, I hope things will settle down soon.

i discovered that too last night ... and i'm really sad about it . especially after her last
blog it's akward - what is happening ? i don't understand . i guess it's a natural thing
that will always happen - some people are coming , others are going , some are moving
back and forth ... i was a fl...r member before and i'm a little worried about the direction
in which things go here , but at least it's an open discussion and it seems as if the iper
team cares about the opinion of their members / customers .
concerning ann - didn't she have problems with photo sharing life ? times when she
only showed pics not wanting any comments , times of longer absence etc ? ..

i'll miss her and her wonderful work and thoughts

i'm not surprised or sad... i said, leaving flickr, that there is no such thing as "virtual friendship" and i was right.
ipernity is very good portal and i really don't need it to be flickr clone with all glittering invitations or awards. i'm not blogger, i share pics only and for me this is my most important activity here, but i like groups because groups makes you see more than only "your network". but people here just don't want to get together, they only watch. and honestly: i hate lurkers.

I think this virtual community, not talking about friendship i haven't met the most part of you...is : us !

yes !
IPERNITY is a community
when Roberto say ""I wish Team Ipernity will have far-sightedness in choosing next moves"'"

well i would answer, don't you think it's us ! to think about next moves ?

Ipernity is the reflect of what we are !

The team offered us some tools to share some things (photo, video, text, zip, groups, blogs, ...)
and WE created the """mood""" of the website !
we never saw any team member telling us do this or do that !
so we're completely free here !
free of think, say, share etc.....

So if some peoples leave (i appreciated a lot the work of Annjin ! )
well it's because she don't like the mood here ... not the website !
i'm a bit surprised of peoples just criticize some things and don't try to improve or bring a solution to a problem

just say : That's website (community) sucks, i leave !
well...
I think Annjin and the other peoples who left, didn't left Ipernity but the group of members we all are here.

Ipernity is very similar to Flickr : what's missing in comparison to first one : glittering invites and hundreeds of nonsence comments we had there (Oh MY ! your photo is so great i ultra fave it)
i'm not talking for Annjin (who wasn't on flickr, as Roberto said) but ....
where the other gone ?
not on Fluckr ?
somewhere else ?
maybe they finally miss these gliter and flattery ...

Let's have fun and share photo !

You are viewing things a little bit too idealistic - ipernity if first of all a commercial company and not a charity organisation and in the end they decide what & when to do, e.g. leave the "Whats new" function in its deplorable state. Annjin's problem is maybe that she was expecting too much. Live is live and net is (only) net.

and i'll continue ! as a child, maybe, but ... :)

and about Ipernity yes it's a compagny i know that
they decide what tool they want to bring or not, but WE, members, decide what will be the "mood" of the community
and the "explore" (ok ..) is not (for me) the ultime point to reach on such community

I think I want to agree with You, Anthony, although Your comment is such as long.;-)) Ipernity is the hardware and we all are the software - We can change the mood of the community willingly, but we all influence the mood only by our being here. The leaving of people is sad, but normal in this form of community ...the way of life is not always straight ( in reality and in virtuality ) - Sorry sounds like the old wise man.;-)) ... So keep having fun sharing photos, opinions, blogs and emotions - Cheers Hermann

Like many i don't have the time to spend on here as i'd like, but i do like sharing, and seeing what other's think of my photos, and when i can i like to try and comment on other people's photos.
I've found it to be pretty friendly on here, but i guess it's not going to be right for everybody. That flickity site is big, and so they'll perhaps always have a stranglehold on this type of photo sharing. Personally i don't use them as they're attitude towards me was patronising and insulting when i questioned a few things.
I hope this site will carry on, and hopefully improve. People will no doubt come and go, but i suppose it's as much up to us to keep it vibrant as it is the Ipernity team.

i know how you feel, roberto, for me there is no real separation between the virtual and the real world which can lead to troubles of the heart. it's sad when people leave. but if she left it must have been that she didn't find here what she was looking for. gotta accept that. maybe she'll miss us and be back.

i like ipernity, it feels cozy here and since i write and do pics i love the blog feature. i still post in flickr as well, just to still connect with people i know there. each community has a different flair... let's stick together :)

Hi Roberto, I can understand what you are feeling but, agreing with some Ipernity's friend, here you can find something really interestin, a little like (yes, a little) to Fl..r and some good instruments.
Actually Ipernity's features are enought to build a bolg, a photo share, docs, and Video. I don't understand you when speaking about a Ipernity's grouth crisis. every day I use to watch photos really interesting. Probably all of us should leave the way to comment a shot like "Oh my god" or "stunning". It's a little bit interesting. I use to prefer if you write me: "mmm, yes could be a good shot but try to cut some from Higtlighs or try to crop a little. If some one disagree with that could always post elsewhere or disable comments. So...I think that could be more useful to write IperniTeam about some trouble and listen if they can do something about it.

Maybe we need a sort of dashboard where users can leave question, reqest, wish or track a problem or something else. But, I repeat, let's talk about. If you leave a place I think that you have already found a better one. Differently you'll rest.
Hope my english is clear and...apologise if not :D

I just saw she's left too. It's a pity and I don't understand the reasons...
Why are people so demanding to "social networks"?
In my opinion, ipernity isn't technically perfect, but that's not the point, we can live with its imperfections and the very interesting offered features vs other sharing sites. People leaving make me think that they can't stand ipernity anymore, and I find that an exaggerated way...

I also was surprised. But not just Ann was leaving. :o(
It's hard to make a desicion like that to leave all things behind. To take a break is something complete different...

hmm i have a bit different point of view.
sometimes we are just tired of that kind of sites in general, or we expect too much, it takes us time that we can use it in different way (work... friends....family... art??) but we open ipy because it's some kind of subconscious duty. of course we don't want to left all contacts and friends we met here but we (at least i) sometimes feel that can't deal with it anymore, don't know where it goes... etc

i think it's better for Ann that she left than being here just for being, it wouldn't be honest, if not with us, then at least with herself. Ann left and is doing what she really wants to do in her life. maybe she should left some goodbye words, or write sth but it isn't easy, and can lead to changing decision. i understand her.

if you miss her so much you can always write an email. it doesn't hurt.
