Flickr: what's happening?

Monday November 12, 2007 at 12:06AM

I only use it for backup uploads, but I continue to have Explores

Last one went to Explore #347 with only 28 views :

Only for SCAB...ange ou démon♀
Only for SCAB...ange ou démon♀

and after uploading a new shot, I had 19 views in 5 seconds: LOL!

Wiki Tangopro says:
maybe it's just the fact that you have marvellous photos
and there is still a great audience 'over there'...?

Thanks Ingo, but this has 28 views, as I said.
My personal explaination: one of the parameters used to calculate Interestingness is a ratio between actual views and average views; if you have 5-10 average views and a new shot have 30, this is a 3-6 ratio; in Explore terms it is a successful shot. Second parameter: there a number of great photographer that are considered influential on Flickr; their visits and faves are weighted more than a visit/fave from an amateur photographer: if you happen to have a fave/visit/invite from Strelitzia or AgedSenator or Valpopando or Adrian Campbell or Bratan, this gives a lot of points in Interestingness. These aren't sure data (interestingness is a secret and mutable algorithm), but the result of my (and others) own observations and experimentations.
The bug, in my opinion, is in not considering the low number of views relatively to my all time average (but only against a short term average)

EDIT: what is really strange are those "views burst" I sometimes experiment; they aren't related to blogs (as someone said); it seems sometimes someone make me the gift of 20-100 inexistent visits... (inexistent because the numebr of comments and commenters is stable: 5-10 close friends are the only one that continue to visit my stream without worrying if I visit theirs)

I have failed to find the logic behind explore interestingness and have stopped worrying about it. Some of my photos still get in explore regardless of number of comments, faves etc. Sometimes I get pleasently surprised! On the other hand, I had a photo that was number 1 on one day and totally out the following day! Doesn't make much sense!
One factor that also seems to go into the equation is the number of groups a photo is posted to. The more groups, the less chance to be in Explore.
Some names that also seem to matter if they comment on the photo are Rebekka and Solea.

I think it's in your case related to groups. I guess you don't add your new flickr pictures no longer to groups, therefor the views from other sources (contacts, search results, and so on) you get are much more weighted. Especially after the last algorithm change.

Roberto Ballerini - travelingpro replies:
Yes: I don't add to groups, I don't add to post 1 - blahblahblah 5 even if invited; I only respond to "invite and... that's all" invites from my friends.
Thanks for the info, Thomas: in previous versions there was a limit of approx. 10 groups and some groups acted as a plus instead than a minus

Some 'view bursts' can be explained by the fact that your picture may be posted at picture bookmarking sites like fffound.com, at Digg or Del.icio.us, which happened with some of mine.

I still use Flickr and get *much* more action over there, than here. However, I don't really understand how they pick their photos for Explore.

Until June 14th I was getting 1 or 2 photos a day into the explore top 500, and 2 or 3 a week onto the front page. On June 14th flickr manually removed all the protest images from explore. Mine wasnt removed because it wasnt tagged. It was on the front page. From June 15th not one single photo of mine has made it into the top 1000, even with 50 faves in a day and no groups. Its a scam.
