"Thanks darling"

Friday June 22, 2007 at 05:36AM

Don't you love the way older people are allowed to call everyone "darling", or "love"? I do.

I just got back from Photo-Continental, where I bought some Ilfosol S developer, acting on Melissa's advice that it was a good developer for TMax 100 and Delta Pro 100. I'll be trying it out this weekend on some sheets of TMax I exposed the other day. I even loaded up a film holder with Delta Pro 100 in anticipation.

I also dropped in a few sheets of Velvia 100F for processing... But I digress...

The woman at the checkout, of uncertain age, but older than me, called me "Darling" in the most natural way of older women of her persuation. "Thanks Darling" as she handed me my receipt.

I love that about older Australians. I don't think it is common in other countries. can someone tell me?

Tell me too - when will I be old enough that I will be allowed to adopt this affectionate way of speaking to strangers? I can't wait!

More people I know from flickr are joining ipernity every day. I was delighted to see Dave and Nikhi in my recent visitors list today. Love that recent visitors feature.

Oh that is so sweet. What a nice story. To your question, I've heard Canadians of both genders call me dear, from the time I was a child and now as a 36 year old. The thing that got me was many years ago at 19, when a younger teen called me 'Miss'!!! Life was never the same : )

I'm so glad that you're excited to develop those sheets. It must be Friday arvo for you - have a great weekend!

I just asked my wife, Helen, how old do I have to be to start calling people darling and she said 50.

only 2 months to go!!

I must add - I deeply dislike it when people call me "sir".

I prefer "mate"

I was kind of irritated when the first American called me "Mam".....uh :)
But Darling is sweet. I have one American woman around here that does that. She is a bit older than me, not that much though, but she calls everyone sweetie, darling and so on. Works with her.
But I haven't heard it many times before ;)
Sure not in Germany :)

I've been called Darl' and Darling and even sweetheart or love/lovie by older men and women. i think you're right about the 50year old mark, but i think if you work in retail/customer services you can be younger.

i think ma'm and sugar are the american versions.

I don't know about 'honey', but the shortening 'hun' is certainly a very americanised thing.
I've been called honey-bun by aussies before...
