Something ipernity will no profit from...

Wednesday April 9, 2008 at 02:58PM

...is the new video feature on flickr. Like last year when the safe search filter was introduced an uproar goes through the flickr community with all the same side effects as last year, emotional discussions in the forum and groups, anti-video groups and anti-video pictures.

And hundreds of people claiming that they will leave flickr. Maybe some will really do, but for them ipernity of course is the wrong place, not only that it allows photos and video, it allows all kind of media at the same time... ;)

So this time another page or different pages will gain from the new flickr feature, I fear...

I promoty ipernity by posting the link to my page and printing it on the moo cards. If it is interesting for others, they will become users, if not I can not do anything, can I? I think this flickr discussing is with the birthday of ipernity boring. If we use it and have fun all is fine, or not?

Yes, of course.

It's the similarity in the reaction of the community on flickr which got my interest and that without the things happened last year this page would have a completely different community.

But this time it goes in a completely different direction. For the anti-censorship people iperniyt was a very attractive alternative, for the anti-video people it's of course not. I wonder which platform will profit this time from the exodus of flickr members...

I actually don't know of another alternative to flick which has 20k+ members do you? I am personally totally not interested in sharing music, videos (other media than photos in general) but I think the way it is implemented here music and videos are not disturbing or anything so I am fine with it. I don't know what anyone could have against the possibility to post videos in itself as long as the site's performance doesn't fall to the bottom of course :-)

I think the most people who are against videos are afraid of a lack of quality cause they fear millions of teenagers will start to upload their snapshot videos to flickr like it seems to be the case on Youtube (which I can't confirm, cause I'm don't really use that page).

Personally I think the way flickr (and of course also ipernity) has integrated videos is quite good. Maybe I had excluded them from explore, but that's a matter of personal taste.

Personally, I think all that ballyhoo about videos on Flickr is somewhat ridiculous. Has Ipernity become a European clone of Youtube? Has the general climate of discussions suffered from the availability of video on Ipernity?

Video on Flickr is a "me-too" feature and is well in tune with Yahoo's way of doing business in the Internet. Nothing to get worried about...

And Flickr intends to limit the length of videos to 90 seconds - I wonder what they hope to achieve with that feature. Sounds impractical to me.

I think, that the vast majority of people on flickr just wanted to share their family, holiday and so on snapshots with their friends and family in an easy to use and cheep way. They do not care about photography skills, social networking, groups, censorship and all this stuff which is important only for some power users like us. And like they take photo snapshots they like to make video snapshots and share them, too.

And for them this flickr video feature is just perfect, they will use it, they will like it and they will pay for it and make a whole bunch of people they know liking it and paying for it, too.

That's the business behind all this media sharing sites...
