Selling pictures. How much money?

Monday January 21, 2008 at 02:25PM

I think some of you have already sold some pictures for different occasions, so maybe someone could help me with the following problem:

How much money could an amateur like me could take if someone want to use his pictures. Up to know I sold two times some pictures. The first time it was someone who need some pictures as decoration for a restaurant. He offered me 200$ for four pictures. The next time I got 200  Pounds for 10 images  from an tourist agency.  They always  wanted  them  as digital data, not as a print.

I was quite happy about this, but of course I don't know if it was a reasonable prize. At the moment I have two other offers. One is a picture for a book title. No idea how much they should pay me.

There's also someone  who wants to use them on his webpage and offered me a prize like on pages as istockphot.com. It's something like 3$ for a midsize picture. That's not really much money.

At the moment I always ask the people how much they want to pay, but of course, that could be stupid, if they offer a less money as it would be reasonable.

Are there any webpages or other sources to get information about prizes for pictures. Or has someone of you experiences with that and could give me some hints?

I don't know if I have a foot in the door, but yes, in the last two or three months people asked sometimes for pictures... But I think there lots of people around here who get much more out of their pictures as I do... ;)

Let me start by saying I've only sold mine once, to be used on a website. Somebody found my pictures online, and contacted me asking to use four shots. Before sending a price, I asked how they would use it, and they said two would be used in the main page, as part of a banner, and the other two in the front page for sections of the site (of course they wanted a digital copy of each).
I offered two options:
A multi-use price of $75 per shot, as long as it was restricted to this particular site.
A single-use price of $50 per shot, obviously limited to this site.

I did not consider the price of unlimited use (in other sites) or for distribution, that would be higher than the $75.

They got back to me indicating they were only interested in the single use, and offered $150 for the four, I settle for $180.

The key of the agreement for me was how they were going to use the pictures. You have to consider that when you set up your price. To the person who's offering you $3 per picture, that's an insult. You shouldn't even sell prints that low, digitals should be more expensive.

But have you sold highres or lowres versions of your pictures? Even for a highres one istockphoto.com only wants to have 10$. Okay, I don't know what you are allowed to do afterwards with the picture.

Yes, but the idea of stock photography is that you know you'll be selling a high number of pictures, thus you are going to make up for the low price. The ones that I sold had no particular value in the open market, but they were perfect for my customer. In other words, the price that I charge was more on how much value the customer was getting from it (or how much it would cost them to come up with something similar). I don't see any advantage on selling a print for $3, unless there is potential to sell an additional 50 for the same price. I'm sure your customer would have to invest a lot more money (cost of equipment, time to take the picture, editing, etc) to come up with something similar; that's unless they can get something in a stock photo site that it's similar.

the other trend these days is they start as a webpage, then the webpage design migrates to stationery and becomes corporate identity, perhaps it may even end up applied to brochures or even packagings? so specified uses of images is important.

book title depends on subject and format, print runs, future editions etc. book titles also appears in advertisings ...

That sounds tricky. I think I'll need much more experience to really make the right decision in every situation. At the moment I'm happy that someone will pay anything for a picture from me. But of course, I don't want to give them away for nothing...

Maybe Ipernity could also create something like a commercial department...

Selling pictures directly with ipernity would be really great! But I fear, that will take some time (if ever...) until something like that will be implemented...
