Numbers

Wednesday October 31, 2007 at 01:22PM

Sorry, but I like numbers, therefor here is something about them ;)

The girl with the purple paras…
Two weeks ago when the new frontpage layout was introduced one of my pictures was shown there for one week. During that time the number of daily visitors of my stream went up from the depressing low number of something between 30 or 40 to something between 120 and 150. That was great, cause the people looked not only at the frontpage picture, they looked also after the other ones, I got more comments, new contacts and so one. That was great!

Now the picture has went away from the frontpage and also the feeling of activity on my stream. That's not very surprising, I know, but something is strange... Still more than 100 people are visiting now my stream. Of course almost all are anonymous ones (the number of non-anonymous visitors is back to same low number as two weeks ago), but why are they coming? I had expected this number will also drop down, cause I thought the visits were only triggered by the picture on the frontpage...

I don't maybe it will go down slowly the next days...

Beside that, there are other numbers to think of. Looking at groups I got a very mixed impression. On the one hand, people are founding, joining and posting pictures to groups very actively. Some of my groups have far more than 100 members and some hundreds of pictures. That's really great. And I also noticed, that people are looking at the pictures in the groups (if you post a picture, you can see an increase in the number of views), but that's it... I don't have the impression that the groups are resulting in more activity like making comments to pictures. That's a little disappointing, I think.

Last time I was complaining about the 'What's hot' list. And I have to say, that this has really improved, since that time. I don't know the reason, but I have the impression the list is now much more diverse, the quality has increased and the number of pictures with icq like chatting comments has dropped down. Maybe that's cause of the new frontpage layout which has moved the focus of this page more in the direction of  photography and more people are now in the focus of attention of a broader group of people as before. And that would be a key to make this place more attractive.

The first one is an interesting point, I remarked nearly the same albeit at a lower level because in general and compared to you I am not that active (have not so many interesting pictures and not so many contacts,...): Since mid-October the number of visits per day/week on my stream significantly grows (from about 60/week to 150/week) although I am not significantly more active!

Why are they coming?
And, even more interesting: What are they doing...?

The number of visits at a certain doc/blog remained almost the same: The six newest pictures I uploaded a week ago altogether have ten vists up to now! So, obviously my visitors only have a short look at my startpage and then move away soon! Or the counting mechanism is kind of strange...?

And, why are all these visitors anonymous? Have so many users adapted their privacy settings to "non notify of my visit"...?

One explanation could be, that all this anonymous visitors are not ipernity users, but came here via google or other search engines. It could be, that ipernity's page rank has increased lately.

That would make sense, I think, cause I cannot imagine that so many ipernity user make use of the anonymity function or are so inactive.

I suppose the anonimity fuction isn't related to this phenomenon. As far as I know there is a strange side-effect when you choose not notify: you aren't accounted as anonymous no more. Anonymous users are not-logged in. A lot of us has noticed the same increase in visits; it is perhaps related to a change in the counting mechanism. If it happens on a single shot, it can be related to an external blog. Another correct hypothesis is yours: perhaps Google/Yahoo/MSN crawlers are starting to collect images from Ipernity.

I think you will find that the method of counting visitors has changed. Previously if a visitor viewed your stream several times in a 24 hour period, only one visit was counted. Now each visit is counted.

That would explain my and other peoples observation.

So they made that change at the same time, when they changed the frontpage layout... Clever ;)

Roberto, I already came across these same questions about number of visits and their annonimity . First, I never paid much attention to the visits, busy enough to answer the ones who left a comment. I consider that each time you step in a library, a bookstore, a reading place or window-shopping, you should not be asked to sign a "guest-list". You can do it if you want too, in this case leaving a comment. Does it look impolite? careless? unfriendly?

Previously on my page, if someone came back a couple of hours later, then the visit counter didnt go up. Now it does. Its the only difference I can see. I'm getting the same number of visitors to my stream, anonymous and member, but the count is double.

I don't know the detail; I've read the same thing you say from other people; my personal experience is that of having multiple visit count in the same day; someone somewhere said the counting was every hour and I gave credit to it; systems as PHPNuke let you decide how much time can pass before considering two visits distinct and perhaps Team Ipernity changed this (It is something configurable in the server logs too)

manganite replies:
So that means practically, that the number of visitors has not increased, only the way they're counted. That make sense, cause the number of comments or faves hasn't increased at all...
