...if one of my pictures is seen, commented and faved by many people and, sure, it makes me feel a little bit sad if another one, I like too, is not so successful. And I think this a pretty natural reaction of posting pictures to a public community which is made for viewing, commenting and faving pictures.
And, yes, I like it to see one of my pictures on the front page of flickr explore, see the view count rushing up to thousands of views in a few hours. That's just great!
It meant that people I don't know appreciate my work, take their time to look more in detail at my picture, while there are millions of other pictures they do not.
I don't know how many people so far have seen my picture. Next week I will have my photo stream visitor number 500000 on flickr, what means that since little more than one year 1000 people every day are looking at my stream and at my pictures. And an unknown number is looking on pages like explore, group pools, search result lists and several third party pictures.
That means hundred thousands of people have seen the world through my eyes, have seen what I have seen, my memories are now part of their memories. Isn't that great?
Certainly that's something an average guy like me wouldn't have ever managed without a platform like that. Years ago all the pictures would have been lost on a hard-disk or some private photo albums. By platforms like this or flickr one can share them with the world. Something that was unbelievable just a decade ago.
So let us be happy about the possibilities new technologies offer for each one of us :)
From this point of view I could obviously not understand people always claiming they are not interested if their pictures are viewed or not, who claim to give a dam on comments and feel more happy if their pictures are practically be ignored. Why? Is it some kind of jealousy? Self defense? Ignorance?

ditto :) ... It's a bit similar to the feelings I had, when my pictures are published in newspapers, magazines, brochures and so.

Was soll denn das?

I take pictures for my sake. I do not take a picture, thinking: "Oh 10 people is gonna love this" (i will be glad if they do) - but its for my pleasure. I find it calms me, relaxes me when i take pictures. Its a hobby. Its my way of having fun. It also reminds my of my childhood.
If people comment, fav. or look at my pictures im happy, but ill be justs as happy if none of my pictures was viewed. They are their for my sake.
So why is not all my pictures private ? I occasionally have some old family members using the internet and for them to sign up and figuring the whole system out, is just too much. They just have a bookmark and no need to remember usernames and passwords.
I like to view other peoples pictures and comment on their pictures, but i do not expect them to comment on mine.

Of course it's nice when your work is recognized and appreciated (here I'm not talking about "private" pics but those aimed at a bigger audience). Its communication in one way, I say something, show something, and the response on what I say /show comes on these sites in comments, views etc.
But taking pictures should be more, and if what one does express doesn't always draw a cheering audience, its still an important part of ones expression. Having focus of what oneself want to say, is just as important as what others think. I've seen many photographers that learn me things, inspire me, but sometimes their expression takes time to understand so they do not have a big crowd around their pics. I always cross my fingers hoping that they see that their pic means a lot still for many, and not get sad because of missing views...
That's why I dislike sometimes the view count, because its not always fair on the photographer's skills. Here, especially with the lack of groups, the activity from each user strikes out on the views. Many more talented people do not get the attention they deserve because, as it is, the site is build up upon showing more active members - and I do seriously have problems keeping track of everybody...If someone has been logged of for sometime, or do not feel comfortable enough to add contacts, put pics in pseudo groups etc they unfortunately can fall out of peoples view. And so do their pictures. And that is not because their pics are less good but because we lose track of the less active, nevertheless great, photographers.

The other point I agree, too. I would never say someone is bad photographer, cause he has not much views. This numbers depend also on many things independent from the quality of the pictures. Some of my favorites photographers, much more skilled them I am, have only a handful of views. And others, posting lots of crap are successful cause of other skills, nothing to do with photography.
The point for me is being happy when I see that others like my pictures, I have not titled this 'I feel like a great photographer' or something like that, it's not about quality or ability. I'm just happy that in spite of being only a hobby photographer people come to my stream and have a look at my pictures, cause they seem to like them. That's a great thing :)
