Your extended network

Monday July 9, 2007 at 01:27PM

Sometimes I'm just clicking through the ipernity network. Choosing someone of my own network, than choosing someone I didn't know from his and so on. Just to get an impression which people are here around and sometimes I find an interesting new photostream.

But what puzzles me is, whoever I visit always there is the message "xxx is in your extended network." So what's my extended network? so is everyone of my contacts other contacts in my extended network? And their contacts also? Wheres the end? And if everyone is Lea ipernities network, are we all together one single extended network? But in this case why this message? It doesn't make sense...

lol, you're right manganite ! Lea is one of the network center. Do you think we should remove here from the proximity algorithm ? Well we think on the other hand we're just like you said... one big family ;)

manganite replies:
No, not removing. Somehow I like her :)

Yes, remove her - because the *whole* network should not be the same as the extended network. The function of the Extended Network is now nulled be lea being linked with everyone. For me, either you drop lea from the algorithm or rename the function. Now it is misleading. I do not want badly executed soft-pornos in my extended network and I am sure that no one from my own network would link to these boys and girls...

Where is the soft porn...;)

No, you're right. If everyone is in my extended network, it doesn't make any sense. I think one step behind my direct network would be enough, but not the friends of my friends friends and so on...

But to cancel lea would break my heart :)

that's how "myspace" is.... EVERYONE is in your extended network there too. seems silly to me.

manganite replies:
Yes, sometimes people seem to forget that this here is not only a flickr clone alone, it's also a myspace clone. And beside I like the networking here, that's the part of ipernity I dislike. It caused the busy layout and the bit too much of connectivity.

I was wondering the same... But Lea could be the answer... ;-)

o.k., then I would like to have a at least a kind of frequency distribution: if someone who is *not* in *my* contacts, but lets say in the list of 80% of my contacts, there is a high probability that this guy or girl will also fit in my own contact list. This problem would me a nice homework for a programming course 8-)

Another possibility would be do distinguish between the level of a contact. The first level is my own contact list, second level are contacts of my contacts and so forth...

The first suggestion sound reasonable.

Well I don't know I am on a Novell network here at work and I have a Linux network at home...so what does that make me...I know Bigoode...an idiot, just being funny but it was a good question, my answer would be who the hell knows, ask Lea...have a great day all...

until now i thought a contact of my contact would be my extended contact... thinking about it again, i remember that immediately after i signed in i already had lea d'ipernity as my contact, not even knowing her. so yes, we must therefore be all contacts . it's confusing...
