that said - i prefer the ergonomics of nikon cameras and they are also more ruggedly built than canons. i break a lot of cameras.

haha you know Canon through and though, but to be honest I do not think that was a conscient decision.. i think i just met a Canon lover and he recommended o me, i bought one.. and the rest you know.. it accumulated the equipment and now i think it's just to late to try something else because it would be to expensive! but i loved also my Minolta e took very nice pics with it too.. so i say.. it's not the camera, it's you! :-)))

d3usa is right. a good camera is surely making things easier and gives you more possibilities, but it can't take pics by itself...
i started with a sony cybershot, which i still have and love ! i reached its limits (in certain situations) and as i can't buy further accessories for it anymore, i looked for an extensible camera. now i also have a nikon. : )
