Thursday September 20, 2007 at 03:40PM

[EN] Groups are open, have fun!
Groups extend your possibilities of sharing and discussing. Let's play!

This is a very first release of Groups. Only pictures can be posted for the moment. We'll enhance of course this feature during the next weeks.

PS: if you find bugs, please use the link Contact us/Report bug at the footer

I´ve just opened up a bunch of useful groups. And I´ve discovered the limit of ten groups you can join as a non-PRO :-(

But next month, I will become a PRO ;-)

same for me, I was quite disappointed when I wanted to join in on all the group-fever
but its ok, I will survive with 10 groups until I get a pro account :)
although I do think 10 is too little. I agree that 20 would be better.
thanks team!!!

Little Injun AKA Clarence the Cross-eyed Lion pro says:
My first response was: great.

Then I found that free accounts can only join 10 groups (not 10 per photo like flickr, but ten groups - period.

For me this is NOT an incentive to become a pro, but to continue my quest for a good flickr replacement! :-(
Posted 11 months ago. ( permalink )
Pandarine pro replies:
I don't see anything wrong with it: If you want more than 10 groups, pay! ;-)))

But I would like to know who exactly invited me to a group. At the moment you can't tell who sent the invitation.

Merci, Team Ipernity!

Little Injun AKA Clarence the Cross-eyed Lion pro replies:
I don't need the other pro account benefits, and I have no problem with the advertising a free account would see.

I just don't think it's a smart move for Ipernity to make such heavy restrictions. On the one hand, they offer twice as much bandwidth as flickr, but then they make the groups almost useless to free accounts.

Ipernity has only about 10.000 members (flickr has millions) so if they want to grow, this is not a smart strategy in my humble opinion.
Posted 11 months ago. ( permalink )
Pandarine pro replies:
How would they be able to survive and add new features, if everybody just wants a free account? ;-)

In *MY* humble opinion, teasers are excellent to make people want to get more benefits. But please, I don't want to attack or correct you. I just look at it from my experience as a small business owner.
Posted 11 months ago. ( permalink )
Little Injun AKA Clarence the Cross-eyed Lion pro replies:
How to survive? With advertising of course, just like every other 'free' internet service. But to get advertisers, you need to grow, and to grow, you need to make people want to join. Advertisers don't care if members are pro or not, they just want many of them.

Oh and don't worry, I do not feel attacked :-)

Did that, thanks for the new step towards becoming better than flickr :-) I always like the under dog (for instance I use a Mac instead of Bill Gates' junk OS). Also thanks for fixing the bug that limited the group view to the last 50 pics posted.

melpomene says:
i think 10 groups is kind of minimal for free accounts. most people join quite a few right? maybe up the limit to 20 for free accounts? it seems that several people have blogged about being disappointed in the low number of groups they are allowed. personally, i have no need to become pro and with the currency exchange it's more expensive to me than flickr (right?). if it was cheaper i might go ahead and get a pro account. i can live with only 10 groups but i was kind of irked to read that limit.

another thing... i can't figure out how to see the groups. not the ones i belong to but all of them so i can "browse" them. just doing a search will have me missing out on a ton of things that might be interesting and that's all i can find that shows the groups. i know i can see a few random ones when i look at my groups but i've just wasted 30 minutes hitting the "refresh" button on my computer to see what some of the group choices are.

What happens if a *free account* member has already joined 10 groups, and a different group admin asks them to add a photo to their group? Can the photo be added without the member joining the group?........just a hypthetical question.

Limiting the amount of groups a free account member can join may be a good way to prevent the spreading of junk prize groups.

That's a very good point. Flickr is overrun by junk prize groups; it was one of the reasons I left.

certainly true, but aren't there other ways to prevent this problem?

Génial... Mais pourquoi que 10 pour les non pros?
Posted 11 months ago. ( permalink / translate )

One problem I noticed with group discussions: obviously, the latest posts are always shown first. This would not be a problem if "latest" was defined as threads with the latest activity, but it seems that this solely depends on the date of the initial post.
So, if someone creates a post with 100 replies and a few fellow members then create several posts with zero replies, the "hot topic" will disappear from view.
I think, that always the thread with the latest reply should be shown by default.
It also would be nice if there were other sort options (popularity...).

Problem with group search.
Maybe someone know the reason for this problem:
If i search in groups for "HDR" the result is:
www.ipernity.com/group/26566

but not the group i have founded before:
www.ipernity.com/group/hdr

Both groups do have the same name.
Thanks in advance.
