What's up? Quoi de neuf ?

Thursday August 30, 2007 at 10:16PM

[EN]

Hello all!

No news from us since a long time! Does it mean we were in holidays, drinking cocktails in a beach bar? No no no!!! We were working on ipernity (and we are still working on ;-)

We led and continue to lead 4 groups of projects at the same time:

1) small improvements and bug fixes

- color search

Now you can search pictures containing a specific dominant color. Just type the color hex code you want in the search area. For instance #123456 or #AA124F.

Funny isn't it? And useful too! We'll improve interface in the future. Of course, the larger the pictures database is, the more numerous the answers are. So let's try! (and let's post pictures containing new dominant colors! It could be a game! Biggoooode???)

- video rotating

That's now possible with ipernity! You'll find a "rotate" button above each of your videos. This is not a common feature isn't it?

- upload and blog by email

Upload new docs or blog easily from your mobile phone or your email software.
How does it work? Let's go to your Preferences / Upload and Blog by email

Warning : this feature is in beta. Only PRO members can use it for the moment. Feel free to report us bugs or to give your feedback (please use the "Contact us" link at the bottom).

- Youtube and Dailymotion embedding

You may now insert Youtube, Dailymotion and other Flash videos in your blog posts, by simply type this tag: <embed ...></embed>

- new atom/rss feeds for your Keywords Tags
You'll find them in your "Tags / Keywords" section

- "replace" feature for PRO members
(just a question of days now - we'll also explain why PRO members only)

- and of course daily bug fixes
and thanks to those who help us debugging ipernity!

2) features increasing activity, audience, and helping our community growing well

We all agree our community needs to grow. There are hundreds ways for that. Here are two:

- multilingualism

"giving access to more people and to various cultures"

The first logical way to reach this goal consists in providing ipernity in many languages. We built in July a powerful online translation tool and opened it to many volunteers who helped us in translating ipernity into German, Spanish and Italian.

Here are the results you can try and even use:

[ German ]

[ Italian ]

There are 2 or 3 small things we have to tune (in the exploration pages). Just a question of days for the official launching.

One time more: we warmly thank you all the members who help us translating. Dear volunteers, this is YOUR work and we are very proud of you. You'll be enhanced in the credits page we'll open at launching.

Please, feel free to report us mistakes, typos and so...

About Portuguese translation, we need 2 or 3 more volunteers (European-Portuguese only. Brazilian people, we'll open your section in a few weeks).

We plan to start many other translations by September. We love diversity!

- address book import

If you get an address book at one of the most popular email providers (Gmail, Hotmail, YahooMail, AOL...), we can check for you whether your friends are already ipernity members or not. You may then easily add them to your network... or invite them to join. Let's try!

3) Groups

Of course, we worked and we are still working on Groups. Job is done at 70%. This is a major improvement requesting time for programming and testing.

We feel an increasing pressure (we also spend time reading members' posts ;-)), and we don't want to disappoint members who need groups to develop their activity on ipernity.

So, here is our decision:

- we'll package basic features only to open a basic but functional version of Groups

the 17th of September 2007

- we'll add advanced features when they are ready

So, Members could start building groups soon ;-)

4) Photoprints

We've just finished to implement a partnership with the Europe's photo services leader company. European members will have the possibility to order quality photoprints and posters of their pictures posted on ipernity (from 9 cents per photoprint, that's pretty cheap!) (we are negotiating something similar for American members).

We are ready on our side. Our partner needs some days more to test. More news very soon.

That's all for today!

Stay tuned!

[FR]

4) Tirage photo

We've just finished to implement a partnership with the Europe's photo services leader company. European members will have the possibility to order quality photoprints and posters of their pictures posted on ipernity (from 9 cents per photoprint, that's pretty cheap!) (we are negotiating something similar for American members).

Bon surf !

Great news but giving a specific date is really very challenging! :-D

I just can say take your time rather than publishing a not working feature. Esp. for groups I assume that this has big repercussions on may aspects of the site and the underlying software (database etc.).

And I can just chime in: please give a sys of life more often. ;-) People tend to get restless...

I have another request:

on other sites, like vox.com you can chose to share your pictures not only with "friends" or "family" but also with your whole network or "neighborhood" which is a good feature if you want to share things with your neighbours but not with people who are not registered to ipernity (it would also be a good way for you guys to gain more members ;) )

Sometimes I want to share things with more people than my friends/family, but less than the whole world, sometimes I want to share things with all my network, but not people outside of ipernity.
I hope this makes sense and you can consider my request :))

Thank you for this information, but theres a very important thing for me that I still miss here: lot tracking of comments on pictures that I ´ve made a comment on....
Theres no way than clicking all pics of friends again and again to read following comments and to communicate with other people( except the reply-function that doesn´t solve the problem) . That´s exertive, complicated and uncommunicative. It´s a bit disappointing for me not to read anything about this problem.

I totally agree! In my opinion, this function is even more important than groups. Without groups, you have to use tags more accurately, but that's web 2.0, and it works. But concerning to the discussion threads on photos, I'm very interested in not only replies on my comments, but posts of more general interest, too. Especially because I'm engaged in a regional photo group which discusses their photos intensively on ipernity, but also because I have many friends around here, who's opinion on photos from other photographers are very important for me. If you know what I mean...

Hm, this is starting to persuade me towards a pro account. But really: A big MERCI for all the work you have put into this.
To use 'Das rockt!' as a translation for 'what's hot' is one of the kind of things that can make my day.

Just hope you haven't introduced content filtering behind our backs now ;-)

Concerning the groups, maybe think about this fact: IMO the infaltionary increase of groups at flickr is a kind of spam and many groups are absurd /have very few memebers.

Maybe the foundation of groups have to be controlled or they have to be deleted if inactive after a while. (Other options could be: Limited group foundations/member, minimum of members after a while, avoiding foundation of similar groups - like BW and B&W at flickr...).
I hope we will see clearly arranged groups, maybe sorted in categories you can browse. Thanks for your good work!

Hello Thomas,
you can see your faves also in your docs, theres a link above.

Thomas Stachepro replies:
Allright, I did not notice that -- because the blue navigation links are different on each page. Then let me vote for consistency.

And by the way, that's still a lot of clicks, assuming I start at ipernity.com:
->Your Home->Docs->Favs

I liked at Flickr, that the homepage already had the "dashboard" functionality -- while the ipernity homepage doesn't have much value to me.

I absolutely agree.

If Ipernity wants to become a real big and lively community, it is a MUST to have a better overview on comments.

Just tested the German interface, because my mother is using this (thank you, she finds it VERY helpful!), and found a small bug at the login. Instead of "Bitte geben Sie Ihre E-Mail-Adresse ein" (which means "please enter your e-mail address") it should say "Permanent eingeloggt bleiben" ("Keep me logged in permanently") where you can check the little box for permanent login.

And sadly, I am still missing the possibility to track more than 20 comments, which would be more important than anything else for a thriving community ...

I've tried uploading photos by e-mail from my mobile phone as per instructions and it hasn't worked. Tried twice, different e-mails & photos and have triple checked e-mail address. :-(
At least one e-mail has gone through OK as received at (other) cc'd address.
Reporting problem as requested above.. thank you!

about the translation - issue: I'd changed to german with your above link. To test the groups-descriptions in english I changed back to english at the page-footer. After that I couldn't go back to german cause you told me that it wasn't ready on the www.ipernity.com/about/translation/de page which was linked in the footer.
Maybee you should change it with the link from above. The issue that maybee some parts aren't translated aren't the big problem - to find this posting to change back to german was more time-intensive than translate the few sentences which aren't allready translated in the german version via googletranslate (if there aren't any - I haven't seen any - maybee I "autotranslate" them by brain 1.0, hm...).

Soon, I would like to see the ability to change the order of groups (the groups themselves, not the pictures in them) in the docmanager. Once you have a few groups it starts getting complicated if you are unable to put them into some useful order :-/
