Placez vos souhaits ici / Post your wishes here

Tuesday June 26, 2007 at 05:06PM

Dear all, while waiting forums, I suggest you to post here your wishes about improvements and new features for ipernity. This thread aims to help us to target your needs better. I'm about to open a special thread for Groups, so it's not necessary to talk about it here ;-) I propose to use English but feel free to use your own language if English is not okay for you / Christian.
*01/07/07 update * you'll find a summary of the first hundred posts in page #2

If you are talking about iperUpload, it's a JAVA program, so it should work.
If you are talking about our 100 files max uploader included in ipernity pages, it's an ActiveX (for IE) / JAVA (for others) module, it should also work... May I suggest you to post a bug report through the link you'll find in ipernity footer pages

At place 18 I see doc manager: Tags search.

I mean, doc manager is still part of ipernity but doesn't work properly. So it doesn't belong to a list of new iplementations.

For me this point has the highest priority because doc manager without searching function is nothing.

* Embedding functions: E.g. for a slideshow on my homepage

The API I guess is one of the most powerful features that might let your (our!) community grow: Simply by letting other free-time programmers do the little tasks. I would be pleased to be able to access my pics from another homepage.

Even if a part of the feature had to be removed because of difficulty's then you will be in no danger of annoying masses of people. I am sure some people would get annoyed if there were delays or parts removed but the majority will understand.

It would be nice to have a resolution and size limitation for background images on a user's homepage. I just stumbled upon a really huuuge (around 700K big and almost 3000 px width) image as background image which almost crashed my computer. Huge background images not only affect the browsing experience in a negative way, they also eat up lots of bandwidth.

would it be possible to remove the option wehere everybody can download my pics?
I want to be able to decide who downloads them and posts them somewehre, and I dont want for people who aren't even logged in to be able to do so.

FOR EXAMPLE: on this page www.ipernity.com/doc/twotwentysix/181884/sizes/s
it is accessible to everbody (even when not logged in) and it would be good to have privacy options where you can choose whether you want to share them for download or not.

this "Would you like to publish this photo on another website?" should be for the photo owner only, unless he chooses otherwise.

Maybe someone mentioned it before, but I would suggest to put the pictures on top of personal homepage, and make them larger. For almost all of us this is a photo sharing side, so the photos should be in the center of the viewers attention!

Or maybe, as a compromise, give us more freedom to arrange our homepage content ourselves.

And as a general remark: Make the layout and navigation simpler. I have not the one idea how to achieve it, I think there're more than one solution.

But only for images? For longer text black background is not good, letters on white background are much more eye-friendly (that's the reason why all office applications have a white, or in case of SAP, light grey background). it's probably been said before, but: if you could

- improve the algorithm that makes the medium sized image during upload (from whatever tool you provide, web or other software), that would be great. Currently, medium sized images are less sharp than after upload to flickr, in comparison.

Be careful when you implement groups. Groups and especially unwanted group invitations for images have been problematic for many photographers on flickr.

Otherwise, a great site. And community. I like it here.

Christian Contipro replies:
A couple of weeks ago, we improved small and medium sizes algorithms. We compared to other photo sites and we thought our rendering was the best. Would you explain further your feeling about that?
Posted 2 years ago. ( permalink )
Michael B.pro replies:
Christian, thanks for looking at this and answering!

Here's what I found:
If I upload original resolution photos to ipernity (not downsized to a screen resolution of 1024x), then the sharpness of the medium size looks quite alright.
On the other hand, my workflow usually is downscaling an image to something like 1024x resolution, resharpening that myself (I use the Gimp) and then uploading it. It is then that the medium size made by Ipernity's algorithm seems to be visibly 'fuzzier' than the uploaded resolution.
Please compare www.ipernity.com/doc/b.michael/322602 and the photo before that and also look at the original uploaded size to see that both originals are equally sharp. Both were saved in the Gimp with a 100% quality setting before uploading.
Both images were uploaded with the JUploadr.
Please let me know when you've taken a look, so I can delete the test images.
Thanks again. No intention to beef. ;-) You're doing great work!

- an easily accessible link where all new features and improvements are announced

- the option of seeing all pages in my preferred layout.
For example, I don't care much for black backrgrounds or foto-wallpapers, so it would be cool if, after signing in, I would have the possibility to see also other people's streams with my preferred layout (or if that's not possible, with the standard layout).

Replacing a doc may have bad effects (what's happen if someone "faved" a doc and this doc is replaced by another one... which could be totally different! What about comments if they are not related to the new doc anymore). I'm not sure it's a good idea.
Posted 2 years ago. ( permalink )
Mickey replies:
This should be the responsability of the one that took the picture IMO. Speaking for myself, I would only do small changes e.g. different crop or brightness/contrast/saturation modifications of the same picture. In any case, I would also leave a comment about the changes afterwards.

If one is always doing massive changes or complete replacements to his/her pictures after collecting comments and votes, other users won't comment on his/her pictures anymore ;-) so I don't see a big risk.

Even if we block "right click / save as" function, a user can always take a displayed picture by using "copyscreen" function. Quality will be the same. This is true for all the Web pages.

Vitamin F replies:
There's no need for a "right click" when I want to "download" an image to my Mac. All I have to do is drag it to the desktop with the mouse, voila.

Other options are, for example, going through the source code. Or simply taking a screen shot. Or, or... If someone really wants a picture, he'll get it.

As far as I know, the only way to prevent that would be not uploading it in the first place. There are online services that offer to notify you every time someone downloads one of your pics, but that's expensive, so... Yeah.

So far I had to ask people to please remove it, if I wanted the doc or blog post to finally disappear from my home page. Since the member tag works like a sticky, it could very easily be abused.

ok, I understand better now. It's not a bug. I'll ask Christophe (my technical colleague) if it's possible.

Under Upload, add an "upload from web " function. I have my own photo sites and want to use some of the photos there (of course, I can also look for the same pics on my hard drive, it would just be more convenient to also have that option).
Give us the chance to use some simple HTML on our homepage, eg to include some dynamic images like with the F***** tools.
You could make this a pro feature...

We do have this feature! Upload page / Web page (at the left).

Ok... it was a question to Laurenz, written in german because my english is not the best (well, it is much better than my french - which is zero). I think Laurenz did ask for another function. YOUR feature is for uploading pictures from other sites into Ipernity (it works - of course).

I'm not sure... but I guess that Laurenz asked for some other. Seems he would use the pictures from here with other sites, maybe like the F****r-Slideshow. That was my question in german - but there is no answer yet.
Thanks for your attention.

I'd like a way to limit the caption text that shows on the docs pages. I sometimes want to put more information on the actual photo caption but I generally only want a sentence or two to show up on the multi-picture pages on when I blog about them.

Perhaps limit the text to the first paragraph? Or provide some other delimiter?

I also vote for a new picture size between medium and original (when appropriate) Something on the order of 1024x768.

1. Ipernity would be near PERFECT to me if it was easier to keep up with comments of comments.. I miss comments so easily!

2. a way to filter out unwanted docs in "Recent Docs" everywhere. For example, I am Deaf, therefore I cannot hear music. It would be nice to be able to filter out music and get to what interests me- PHOTOS! :-)

Ipernity rules!

I am very sad, because yesterday I discovered many missed comments only by chance - because I clicked on the individual photos. I don't know how many comments I have missed, because so far I uploaded 900 docs, and I can't possibly check under each and every one of them individually.

PLEASE give us a way to see ALL comments under our docs and posts, so people will not leave because we don't answer their comments, and they don't feel welcome here.

Thank you for making this a priority!

I believe you can get that from "My Space"->Activity page. It may not give you *all* the comments/faves, but it gives you the latest ones.

Maybe it doesn't go far enough back for you?
Posted 2 years ago. ( permalink )
Pandarinepro replies:
Exactly, that's the point.

I am always checking on my "recent activity", but I am in a different time zone (6 hours back), meaning when my friends comment on my stuff, I am in dreamland. And by the time I'm back on the computer, I have missed half of the comments that were written while I was sleeping - and right now there is no way to retrieve them, other than checking each single doc individually.

You get exactly 20 comments there.

Someone mentioned, he gets a bigger scale, but I have no clue how he did it (using the same browser as I do...)

Similar to "Latest Docs & Posts": Latest Faved Pictures or Latest Voted Pictures

This would show a bunch of beautiful photographies, that my contacts have faved (voted) and provide a great opportunity to explore the photo artists on Ipernity.

priority for me + more wishes

1.activity: far more history of comments (not less than 3 month) + i really want to see the following comments of others to a doc where i commented myself.
without this chance it's almost impossible to have a good communication with friends.
this is the thing that i miss very very much here. it takes endless time to try to participate in nice picture-talks. it is very frustrating to miss sweet silly comments and feedback of others...
if it is not possible to add this possibility, it would be at least a bit helpful to add a 'label' that i can see if my comment is not the last.
+ it should be possible to make a 'mulitiple-reply' when you make an own comment.
2.albums: re-aranging the order
3.all docs: the possibility to change the download-permissions for every single doc and not only generally for all docs
4.audio: playlist of audios that i like from others + the possibility to place a picture for own audios instead of the neutral audio-sign
5.network: guestpass, and i would like to know who in my network added me as contact, friend, family.
6. groups
7.a central 'help-forum' for technical questions

and i hope that people who want to develope greasemonkeys for ipernity do get every support which they need.

thank you for all your great work and this thread - i like ipernity ! :)

I second Panadrine and Artelisa's thoughts on comments. I would check my recent activity and see a comment. Then by chance I would click on the picture the comment was on and see dozens MORE comments I had no idea existed. Like most of you, I cannot click on every picture to make sure I caught everybody's comments.

Without a comment "thread" that is easy to keep up with on the photos we have commented on (It stands to reason that if we made a comment, we might be curious about what others said, too) , it is very difficult to feel in touch with a community for me. I LOVE ipernity, but without that feature, it feels very fragmented and isolated. :(

I'm not complaining, I'm making suggestions in hopes of having that implemented- it would be so freaking SWEET and about perfect for me ;)

Thanks for listening.

A suggest for the interface:

When adding the new picture size, it might be more user friendly to replace the button "view all sizes" with a drop down menu that shows the available sizes (similar to the "other options" menu)

Like this, you would have less server requests because the user would not need to choose the size on the next screen anymore.

I am with Barbara (Pandarine) on this one.

The only thing I really miss, is the ability to see all the comments on my stream.
The 20 last is really not enough.

Didn't see it mentioned here and I'm not sure if it's feasible. What about picture categories? Keywords/tags are simple and easy but it's really hard to find pictures you are interested in e.g. try to find portraits by using the search.

A predefined category tree like the one from deviantart is really a big plus when searching pictures... well, a bit dicipline is needed from the uploader though.

tonight, I've had some of this: www.ipernity.com/error/503 ;)
that would not be too bad, since I know what it means and that this could happen ...

BUT one bad thing happened according to one of these errors:
I've typed in quite a big blog-entry (about 30 minutes of typing) and when i've pressed the send-button, a "sorry ... temporary overload" occurred and my typed text was gone!
the first thing was that i pressed the reload-button of my browser to post again, the second that i pressed the back-button ... no chance to reget that text :(

a possibility would be, to write a blog-post into the session when overload occurs, and if the editor loads and detects such an already typed text in the session, asks to open it or if the user wants to write a new one ...

Pandarinepro replies:
A suggestion for these 503 error pages:

On the error page it says "Please try to reload this page in a few minutes". But if you reload as suggested, it refreshes the error page itself, and one doesn't even notice when the service is back: www.ipernity.com/error/503

Maybe that should be changed ;-)

another one: "who is permitted to read a doc" in moment private vs. public.
A nice third point would be "members", to only allow logged-in members if someone doesn't want it internet-wide but wants to allow members outside his/her network

The 20-comment feature gets really annoying now, the more docs we upload.

Last night, a contact commented lots of my pictures which I had uploaded over the last days. Result: This morning I could only see the last 20 of HIS comments - but everything else was lost for me, and there is no way to retrieve it ... or is it?

I wish that blog had *labels* so that it would be easy to sort the different content. For example: "reading journal", "baby journal" etc. It would also help us sort blogs by language...

It would be nice to have blogroll type of thing too -- a place where we could put the links to our friends blogs all over the internet. Most blog sites have that sort of feature -- so they would probably link back to us too :)

Thank you!

(btw -- that calender in blog is really great!)

There's 199 comments here, so forgive me for not reading through them all if I am repeating what others may have posted already.

I would like the ability to modify my Home Page from the viewpoint of what shows at the top of the page, I post photos more than I do blog posts, so would prefer that to be at the top of my page. Maybe whatever you last do, photos or blogs, appearing at the top would be more agreeable to all members though.

I use something called PhotoFront to feed a slide show to my own web site, I really like the sleek interface they have designed, sadly it only works with Flickr. Is this something that could be used with Ipernity if the PhotoFront people set it up to do so? Do you have any alternative suggestions? What I am doing is creating a dynamic set on Flickr, using Dopiaza's Managed Sets, which then feeds PhotoFront, which then is viewable through my own web site. Here's an example link: www.aviewfromhere.com/gallery.html

Finally (oh good he's almost done), would it be possible to change the date posted on photos? This would be especially helpful when first starting out so that my photos could be put back in chronological order.

Thanks for taking the time to read this... I love what you are doing here and look forward to how things move forward!
