Selecting photos for the ipernity frontpage

We are often asked about how photos are selected to be displayed on the ipernity frontpage.

So here's the answer!

Every Friday, we define a theme. As you may notice, this week theme is "ballooning" ;-)

Then we look for photos matching both the selected theme and the following requirements:
-- aspect ratio: 15/10 landscape (to be compliant with the frontpage layout),
-- no frame,
-- original content,
-- ideally, CC licensed,
-- creative, artistic content deserving the frontpage,
-- enhancing the ipernity service.

Of course, tagged photos have more chance to be found!

At last, we select the 5 ones we prefer and put them on the frontpage.

All the selected photos are faved by "team ipernity" and can be viewed here:

We plan to create more exploring possibilities including an explore/frontpage page.

OK ! This selection is concerning the main views you select for the true front page...
But I'm thinking that the questions ask between Ipernitians are around the 'ce qui bouge" in french...
Because they seem not informing about thema... But where ? I'm not, for me !

Team ipernity has replied to GRANAD'A

We don't have time to translate each article into all the ipernity supported languages. Maybe one day when we have means! But visitors can use machine translation through the "translate" link below each article. Of course that's not perfect but it helps for a global understanding.

Concerning the "What's hot" section: it concerns documents and posts published the last 7 days only. For each item, we make a calculation based on the number of comments, number of people having left comments, number of faves.

I think this process is quite erroneous because sometimes the comments are more like a chat. But this has nothing to do with the quality. And this pictures are always an top. Number of faves and visits (in relation to each other) is a better indicator i think.

true, cause if you have a nice and active network, you can easily push pics to the top and "falsify" the "rating"

Absolutly. It's the f**kr- way... IMO it should be just an random select of a photo - without any manual selevction so everybody has the "chance" to be "at the frontpage". And then it shows the "real ipernity"- not just the "seems to be the best of best".

My tags are mainly in two languages: esperanto kaj spanish. So, my photos have less chance to be selected :-(

I propose that, every week, you contact the international team that helps you with the multilingual interface, to communicate the new thema. The people in the team should answer with 2-3 corresponding tag words in their own languages.

So you can extend the search into non-english photostreams.

We usually define 2 or 3 keywords tags and translate them in all ipernity languages for our search ;-)

c'est bien de le savoir ! merci à vous :)
pour le cadre ( frame ) : si vous choisisez une pic avec ça
on peut l'effacer facilement , car normalement le cadre
est mit sur une autre plaine

Is ist not possible also to include 4:3 Photos or find a layout that can deal with different ratios?
The way it is now Four Thirds, medium format and compact cam users are kind of discriminated. ;)
