Import your photos from Flickr!

Tuesday June 19, 2007 at 05:03PM

We have just released a GreaseMonkey plug-in, allowing

you to import your photos from Flickr.

Not only original photo is imported, but also:

  • title and description
  • private/public sharing option
  • latitude and longitude
  • the first 20 tags
  • albums list (coming soon...)

Quick and easy. Here we go!

Thank god! I don´t need this script. I´m just starting from the scratch here. A good way to rip it up and start again.

I hope the group-function will come soon. So we can start a new Hamburg/Germany-Group here. I have a good and growing community that wants to move...

I'd also like the import to be "bulk" oriented. Maybe in the course of time, with 1Gb a month as a Pro, I could manage to have all here. In chronological order...

btw this script will enable you to download all your pics from flickr relatively painlessly... www.flickr.com/groups/flickrhacks/discuss/72157594489070277/

then i suppose it's just putting them in the uploader..

sadly it doesn't download anything other than the pic, so all descriptions tags etc are lost..

Christophe Ruellepro replies:
Thanks Alexia. I'll give a look now.
Posted 2 years ago. ( permalink )
Alexia Cournoyer replies:
you're welcome christophe. if nothing else it is a good way to back up everything you have on flickr. my tip is if you download each of your sets then you can add your generic and set specific tags to the uploader for each set. still means work, but it is a *lot* easier than doing it through the organiser or by hand.. :)
Posted 2 years ago. ( permalink )
Kiezkicker replies:
Try one of the following instead which download tags and descriptions, too:

Who can print your photos Only you edit
Who can blog your photos Any of your contacts
Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs Creative Commons
Try it. :)

OK, Original works now; But after loading the previous version the script names have disappeared from the Greasemonkey (0.7.20070607.0) context menu (otherwise GM seems to work normal).

thanks. i'll give it a try.

why only 20 tags? is that the tag limit on iPernity? on flickr, the tag limit is 75 tags. in order to import my photos from flickr, i need to get all the tags (up to 75), so this script won't do it for me (yet).

@Paul Peeraerts

ecstaticist says:
This is great, but as I have 4299 photos on flickr, I rapidly ran out of space on my free account, and based on what I read about your pro accounts, I will rapidly run out of space even if I upgrade. For example, I have a set I've been working on on flickr with 932 dew drop refractions in it. Any chance of getting a one-time account transfer limit? I have joined and I am leaning toward staying by buying pro, but I would like to bring my entire collection with me.

Until the script allows batch uploading, I don't think I will be using it. I will probably start all over again.
Posted 2 years ago. ( permalink )
Loupiote (Old Skool) says:
yes, batch uploading AND getting the 75 tags would be a big plus.

also people use two different way to geotag their photos on flickr. some people (like me) use the old-stile explicit geotags, e.g.

geotagged geo:lat=40.75465 geo:lon=-119.2365

some other people use the flickr-integrated geotags, i.e. not real tags, but info hidden in the flickr database that can be queried with the flickr API.

in the case of using real flickr tags, i think it does not work if the geo-tags are not among the first 20 tags, because of the plug-in limitation of 20 tags.

and i don't know if ipernity can import old-style explicit geotags, either. flickr can, using www.flickr.com/account/geo

I second ecstaticist's comment and plea - pls consider allowing a "one time transfer" for those of us who have largeFlickr collections. Obviously, only for those acquiring "pro" (which I am already leaning to, but this would definitely be a big push!)

Nice work so far, but needs a bit of improvement! My feature requests:

- important: make it possible migrate geotags from the map _somehow_. it's so tedious to do all that work again, and geotags rock so hard! I'm not sure whether a greasemonkey scrip can do this, if not pleeeease explain how we can do this.

- migrate whole sets / albums

- less important: migrate licensing options

Great tool. I've imported a picture from flickr with GPS info.
Latitude: N 55° 42.33' 0"
Longitude: E 12° 30.12' 0"

But it never shows up in my exif at ipernity.
Also when i upload a picture directly to ipernity, the GPS information is not used. Am i doing something wrong?

Posted 2 years ago. ( permalink / translate )
Loupiote (Old Skool) says:
import script does not work with photos taken with Sony Alpha camera: photo description is not imported from Flickr.

instead, the text "SONY DSC" appears. presumably due to some EXIF metadata generated by the Sony Alpha and incorrectly interpreted by the import script.

an example of photos that cannot be imported correctly is here: flickr.com/photos/loupiote/856239663/

Are there any news on this yet? I continually upload batches to Ipernity (I'm still using Flickr until my pro-account expires) and I'm currently at 'chunk' 16). It's been a few weeks since I last imported photos.

Also, I know I'm slow but is it possible to upload just a few photos at a time, using Greasemonkey?

And do I have to uninstall and re-install it?

To answer my own questions: version 1.4 works (at least for now). Thanks!

There are separate scripts to move single photos to/from Flickr--as it says on the link right underneath the instructions :) (however, the link's out-of-date).

Unistall scripts by going to Tools/Greasemonkey/Manage User Scripts (just in case you were wondering...)
